Indie Series: Operation MBBS
Dice Media has added new series to its YouTube channel titled Operation MBBS, which is sure to keep you entertained, intrigued and surprised at the twists, hardships and sacrifices it takes to be a distinguished doctor in times where the effort in medicine continues to be consistently questioned. With over 12 million people watching the first episode and over 6.8 million views in the following chapters, it is clear that this popular channel keeps stirring the interest of its audience.
Released on February 22nd, the web series consists of five episodes in an almost 30-minute format that tells the story of various characters and how differently their struggle is depicted in their times as medical students. Themes branch out episode through episode as characters in this series grapple with family setups, differences in the method of getting into a prestigious school and wanting to pursue their dreams in medicine against their family’s wishes.
When you strive to have a conversation with someone about a series that involves medicine the most popular ones to always pop up will most likely be Grey’s Anatomy or House, which discloses the struggles of an already established doctor or an already established team in the medicine field.
Rarely do you see a series tackle the lives of medical students and their struggles to become established in the field or the struggle of those who wish a different life from it. This helps the story become so much more relatable with a script written by Ayesha Nair, Puneet Batra and Pravin Yadav that sets out changes in our three main characters Nishant, Huma and Sakshi, all very well played by Aysuh Mehra, Sarah Hashmi and Anshul Chauhan.
Nishant tackles being the student that easily gets into one of the best colleges in the country. Huma is focused on studying hard to leave a lasting impression. Sakshi wants to prove her family wrong after they all agreed that she does not have what it takes to become a doctor. Seems like a handful for a trio who is riding on their first year of medicine school.
It is also signified in a very interesting way the contrast in some seniors and how their excitement has simmered down but are still clearly seen as almost royalty for being above the “freshers”. Rukamni, a senior, shows no mercy to our main characters after selling the boneset she promised Huma to Nishant because he had a better price for her, after a clear shot shows a sign stating that the campus is “ragging free”. They both try to defend their case with honesty but end up bowing down to their senior, played by Momita Jaisi, and leave embarrassed. This dynamic leads to our main characters meeting for the first time and becoming friends in the long term after a very delayed apology from Nishant that includes missing boneset parts.
The union between our three main characters makes for an enjoyable bit on the series in which you consistently find yourself rooting for all of their aspirations and even laughing at Nishant’s constant pranks which start to slowly derail both Huma and Sakshi from their books into the principal’s office. The midterm result twist between Huma and Sakshi and the reveal of Nishant’s big secret open the door to discuss themes of failure, discontent and withdrawal that lead to great moments and spark an important connection with these characters specifically, Huma calling her mother in Episode 3 and Nishant calling his father in Episode 4.
Characters that peek interests include Ketan “KC” Chotai, played by Prateek Pachauri, a student who does not take his studies seriously and consistently complains when he is being pushed back another year in the same class, and Aakash, played by Deepak Simwal, who works at the cafeteria with his father. His storyline may be the most relatable in a peculiar way since he dreams of being a doctor against his father’s wishes. He becomes close with Sakshi, who helps him develop his knowledge through the use of the ‘Unacademy’ app.
This company in particular became a very interesting and innovative portion that is shown in certain episodes as the series moves on. It serves as the show’s main patron and has become Indian’s largest learning platform. The app grants you the opportunity of taking online classes with some of the country’s top educators. It also provides material for major examinations in the Pre-Medical, Railway and other courses. With over 8 million views every month, ‘Unacademy’ strives to impact India’s youth group. It currently holds over 3M subscribers on YouTube making it India’s top educational channel.
Dice Media currently holds 3.25M subscribers. The channel is a division of Pocket Aces, which is considered India’s leading digital entertainment company, and stems out of four channels that ranges from interactive gaming, lifestyle, shorts and web series each covering every popular social media platform. Their mission? To solve dullness with entertainment.
Operation MBBS solves that in every way.
