Indie Content Creators: Faith, Diversity and Family

To open doors and invite audiences in to catch a glimpse of what your life might be is a consistent tendency with content creators online. This interesting pair of creators bring a new perspective in sharing their lives with 7 children. With a mix of faith and different culture backgrounds, Mazelee brings something new to the table in the ever so often growing digital platform that is YouTube.

The subject of blended and multicultural families has been presented quite frequently during the past couple of years. Commercials, movies and series have welcomed even more the idea of a household that shares differences in food, religion and upbringings to establish a strong connection with an audience. For our content creators, Alena Maze and Joe Lee, these differences are what makes their family stronger.

With 1.5 million subscribers this channel is composed mainly of “cinevlogs”, more commonly known as cinematic vlogs. This showcases a more documentary style technique that helps it be prominent from other video blogs. Lee, who is a street photographer and photojournalist, serves as the director of photography and composer of all episodes. Maze, a data analyst who is currently obtaining her PhD, is in charge of directing.

The couple strives to give an inside look to the accomplishments and trials that come with being in a Black/Korean relationship and raising a multicultural blended family. Maze also includes many of her snapchats taken throughout the same day in some videos in order to present a different perspective. The couple met when they were 13 years old, but lost contact after high school. They reconnected years later and decided to give their relationship a try.

The channel currently has a total of 366 videos that range from 12 to 20 minutes and are posted every Tuesday and Friday. This glimpse into their daily lives feels sincere and interesting. Lee and Maze aim to explore topics like faith, work ethic and knowledge of each other’s backgrounds in open conversations with their children. They share recipes, daily activities and special occasions which showcase a growth in their bond and a strong family ethic.

The most recent videos share their experience with their children during the pandemic, the move to a new house and the birth of their 7th child. Alternatively, they present tours, challenges between husband and wife or partnership videos with one of their many sponsors. With this, the family has established a strong following in other social media platforms with 268k followers on Instagram and 1.3 million followers on Facebook, who consistently commend them for the content that is presented on their platform.

Religion is the main topic that surrounds most of the conversations depicted in Mazelee’s chronicles. In some videos, they will refer to a bible verse that may signify the moment or cinematic vlog that is being presented to the world. In others, they will take the time to reflect with their children about what holidays truly mean as presented in one of their recent videos where Alena shares with her children how Easter ties in with resurrection Sunday.

This accurately reflects Mazelee’s mission in showcasing their lives on YouTube. To them, their journey creates a path to find their destiny through God’s will. For the couple, faith plays a strong foundation in their relationship and helps them find comfort in the fact that, no matter their backgrounds, they share the same beliefs.

Mazelee proves to be a strong force in the YouTube community as the art of a refreshing family dynamic seems to be rare now a days. If you are in search for insight on how the differences in people can prove to be an energy to carry on your descendants for a better and understanding life, this is definitely the channel for you.
