Indie Content Creators: A Beauty Genius

Most people intend to reach an audience by presenting themselves in ways that can either be very effective or cause that click on the unsubscribe button. The saving grace of many stars in the digital platform is how approachable they are. For Weylie Hoang, relatability seems to be the least of her problems.

In her channel, Hoang thrives in releasing engaging content that entraps viewers from the start. The great aesthetic scene that she establishes in her videos from beginning to end presents a welcoming and relaxed quality that appeals to the viewer. The basic editing sets up nice transitions from scene to scene in different formats adapted to the subject being discussed.

Topics can range from advice on beauty, hair and skincare. In some of her lifestyle videos, Hoang may include some routines, recipes or even what her current favorite book is. In others, she likes to sit down and have a conversation with her audience.

A popular series in her channel is Girl Talk. Composed of videos that range from 10 to 20 minutes, Hoang reaches out to her audience with open conversations about body positivity, relationships, confidence and feelings about life. These videos reach the appeal of her viewers as they see these topics being discussed with an honest point of view.

Hoang also doesn’t shy away from including educational videos on her Chinese culture. These range from traditional Chinese recipes and quite a few “vlogs”, commonly known as video vlogs, in Cantonese language with English subtitles. This adds an interesting twist to the known lifestyle video blogs, as Hoang openly embraces her heritage.

This marks the most significant part of Hoang’s success. She chooses to carry her brand in chronicles that depict a realness where you feel like you’ve been catching up with a friend you haven’t seen in a long time. She also aspires to publish content that will enlighten her 1.71 million spectators.

Alternatively, her channel portrays other well known videos like grocery hauls, outfit ideas, mukbangs and collections. The channel currently banks a total of 508 videos that are posted almost each month. Audiences keep being enthralled with her content as views for each video range from 90k to 200k.

With a degree in Beauty Industry Merchandising and Marketing from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, Hoang started her channel in 2007 at 15 years old. At 27, the beauty guru counts with 514k followers on Instagram and 90k followers on Twitter. This has prompted the creation of another channel called WahlieTV, which showcases her daily life, including her relationship with Wah, a fellow YouTuber, their three dogs, and two recently acquired guinea pigs.

Functioning also as a speaker in various social media, beauty and digital panels, Hoang has easily become an influential presence in her community. Teaming up with profit and nonprofit organizations, Hoang is known for being an avid supporter of giving back. Every collaboration presented in her projects or videos has included a cause that she supports.

In 2019, she launched the clothing brand Womn in collaboration with fellow YouTuber Sophia Chang. The line was created in the hopes to create a change in fashion by using fabric that is environmentally cautious. Her content has also led to collaborations with well known brands including Pixi Beauty and Physicians Formula, who are both cruelty-free.

Hoang’s channel has demonstrated how sticking to simplicity in what you present is appealing to audiences. By sticking to her own trends, her channel has proved to be a delightful outcome when looking for refreshing and responsive content. If you ever decide to sit down and enjoy Hoang’s world, get ready to chat with the sister you never had or, as she openly states in her bio, the one you never wanted.
