Warren Wilson, one of the first Black broadcast journalists in Los Angeles, has died at 90. His broadcasting career began in the ‘60s, when he reported on some of the city’s most significant moments of the century including the 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, the 1969 Manson family killings, the 1992 LA riots, the 1995 OJ Simpson trial, and the 1997 North Hollywood Bank of America shootout. He received numerous awards for his work including multiple Emmys and a Peabody.
Furthermore, Wilson helped multiple minorities accused of crimes surrender safely. “I guess I can identify with the underdog because of what I’ve had to go through as a Black man working in a white world,” he told the Los Angeles Times in 1993. “I take some pride in thinking that maybe someone — a suspect or a police officer — stayed alive because of all this.”
In 1984, Wilson joined KTLA and remained with the station for over 20 years. KTLA reporter Eric Spillman recalled Wilson as “a trusted reporter,” stating, “He was brave. During the riots, Warren went down to the South LA area and interviewed a shop owner who was trying to put out flames while standing on the roof of a burning building. I will never forget that.”
Wilson’s family shared the news of his passing in a public statement. “Our beloved father Warren Wilson ‘Papa’ died Friday, September 27th, 2024 in Oxnard, California,” they announced. “He was 90. His demeanor on the air as an iconic television journalist was just as authentic as he was a father, unsensational, sincere, a voice calming and eloquent.”

Longtime Today anchor Hoda Kotb announced that she will leave Today after 26 years at NBC News. Kotb shared her desire to spend more time with her grandchildren and family, detailing the importance of taking as much time as possible to be with loved ones while the chance is still present. Kotb will remain with Today past the first day of 2025 and later remain within the NBC family.
“I was doing the math and realized I have spent 26 years at NBC... I just turned 60. It was such a monumental moment for me when I turned 60, and I started thinking about that decade. What does that decade mean? What does it hold? What is it going to have for me? And I realized that it was time for me to turn the page at 60 and to try something new.” Kotb continued, “Remember our 60th birthday that we had outside? I remembered standing outside looking at this beautiful bunch of people with all these gorgeous signs, and I thought, ‘This is what the top of the wave feels like for me.” I thought, ‘It can’t get better.’ I decided that this [was] the right time to move on. I had my kiddos late in life and I [thought] they deserved a bigger piece of my time pie that I have. I feel like we only have a fine amount of time. With all that being said, this is the hardest thing in the world… I’m going to be here through the first of the year, past the first of the year, and I’m going to stay in the NBC family, but it’s kind of a big deal for me.”
