Ratings Report: ‘The Equalizer’ Captures Viewers For CBS, ‘Beauty In Black’ Starts Off Strong

Broadcast: The crime drama series, The Equalizer starring Queen Latifah (Girl’s Trip, Taxi), premiered its fifth season on CBS on October 20th and has released episodes each Sunday on the broadcast network. The series is a reboot of the same name created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim. The series fifth episode sparked a resurgence in audience numbers for the series at the end of November, garnering a total audience viewership of 5,140,000 viewers and saw a 5% boost in viewership. The series’ fifth season is currently sitting at a 67% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. This season is on track to have 10 episodes total like seasons before it. 

The series centers around Robyn McCall, played by Latifah, who is an enigmatic and mysterious woman with a secret background. She uses her extensive skills to help those with nowhere else to turn; McCall comes across to most as an average single mom who is quietly raising her teenage daughter, Delilah; but to a trusted few, she is "The Equalizer" – an anonymous guardian angel and defender of the downtrodden, who's also focused in her pursuit of personal redemption. The series also stars Liza Lapira (Fast & The Furious, NCIS), Laya De Leon Hayes (Sister Code, Doc McStuffins), Lorraine Toussaint (Selma, Concrete Cowboy), Tory Kittles (American Heights, Bessie) Adam Goldberg (Dazed and Confused, Friends) Donal Logue (Blade, What We Do In The Shadows), Gayle Samuels (Equity, Honeybee), Jennifer Ferrin (Mosaic, The Cape), and more. The seventh episode of The Equalizer airs on Sunday, December 8th. 

Streaming: Beauty in Black is Netflix’s newest drama series created, directed, and executive produced by Tyler Perry and premiered on the streamer on October 24th. The series was ranked third on the Nielsen Report for original streaming series with 833 million minutes viewed. The drama series received a stark 51% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes despite the strong viewership performance it gathered. The 8-episode series focuses on the story of a stripper, named Kimmie played by Taylor Polidore (Wicked City, Snowfall), who’s fate takes a turn when she crosses paths with the wealthy, dysfunctional family behind a cosmetics dynasty and a devious trafficking scheme.
