Docusoap: Paramount+ has announced the global expansion of the hit reality series Are You the One with MTV Entertainment Studios’ Are You the One – Global Edition. The show will stream exclusively on Paramount+ and its international markets. In this series, 22 recently single men and women from all over the world are put through a matchmaking process in search of the “Perfect Match.” If the singles can identify all 11 couples at the same time, they equally split a large cash price. With this expansion, the series pushes past even more boundaries than it already has, as it was the first sexually fluid reality dating show in the U.S. Are You the One – Global Edition is set to begin filming this summer.
Game Shows: Emmy Award-winner RuPaul Charles, host of RuPaul’s Drag Race, will host and be executive producer of a new game show on CBS this year called Lingo. It will premiere later this year. Mitch Graham, SVP of Alternative Programming, CBS, has alluded to “Wordle”, the daily word game that was recently acquired by the New York Times, in his description of the game that will be played on Lingo. In the game, teams of two people will face off to guess letters to reveal “seemingly simple words.” Graham has expressed his high hopes for the show’s success: “RuPaul’s flair and sharp wit, coupled with the ability for viewers to play along at home, make this a timely show with wide appeal that we’re excited to join our network lineup.”
Competitive Series: CBS’s Survivor season 42 premiered on March 9, 2022. The premiere was two hours long, just like season 41’s premiere. The date of the finale of Survivor 42 hasn’t been announced yet, but it is expected to air in late May if the season follows the 13- to 14-episode pattern the show has previously stuck with. The three tribes are the Ika, Taku, and Vati tribes, each of which includes six contestants from diverse backgrounds.
NBC’s new Regency Era dating competition show, The Courtship, premiered on March 6. The Bachelorette meets Bridgerton with this unique take on the reality-dating scene. The series is set in a 19th-century castle in England, featuring 16 male suitors competing for Nicole Remy’s affection. Remy, tired of modern dating, will search for her lifelong partner in the “good old-fashioned way.” Episodes will be available on NBC and will stream the following day on Peacock. Previously, Remy came close to winning Matt James’ heart on his season of The Bachelor in 2020. Before her current job as a software engineer and project manager for Making, she was a Seattle Seahawk dancer.
Lifestyle: Single’s Inferno, a Korean dating drama that recently started streaming on Netflix, became one of the most globally watched TV shows just a few months after its release. One of the show’s contestants, Song Ji-a, was elevated to stardom because of her role. However, a recent scandal has completely reversed that status: after she admitted to wearing knockoff designer goods on Single’s Inferno, The Manager, a Korean variety show by the same creators of the original show that The Masked Singer is based on, edited her out of their show. She has received heavy backlash from her fans, as many of them have placed her sincerity into question. She has apologized both on Instagram and on Youtube. Although some fans consider the issue “silly,” the scandal has been huge in Korea and has affected many aspects of Ji-a’s career.
