Reality Beat: Stephen and Ayesha Curry Step Into The Game Show World
Docuseries: Due to a loophole in Love Island’s applications, the show now accepts applicants who are in relationships. However, since the show has exclusively been for single people, the chances of making it on the show if you are currently dating are low. Love Island 2022 will be the longest edition of the reality TV series yet. The chosen cast will spend ten weeks in a new villa this summer. Recently, ITV confirmed they would not be extending the series to same-sex couples.
Game Shows: Stephen and Ayesha Curry co-host About Last Night, a relationship-themed game show that debuted on February 10, 2022. In each episode, the married couple invites three celebrity couples on an “exclusive date night” on which they play relationship trivia and games in an effort to determine which couple knows each other the best. The Currys were inspired by the 70’s game show TattleTales, and they have always wanted to start a project together. After pitching a reboot with Fremantle, which created the original, HBO Max greenlit the series. The couple told NBC News that they have enjoyed “step[ping] out of their comfort zones to tackle something new together.” About Last Night is currently streaming on HBO Max.
ABC’s $100,000 Pyramid, hosted by Michael Strahan, has been renewed for a sixth season. The biggest change this season will be the show’s location; it will be moving from its New York City home to Los Angeles. Taping will take place around April/May 2022, and the show is currently casting.
Competitive Series: After an over two-year-long COVID-19 hiatus, The Amazing Race has returned to CBS. There are a few changes to the show, including which teams are still competing and the impacts COVID-19 has had on transportation methods. Although all nine remaining teams were told they would be invited to continue the race after the hiatus, only five of those teams returned. To strengthen the competition, producers invited back the two teams who had already been eliminated. In regards to transportation, all teams will now fly on chartered airplanes and will drive themselves in order to avoid public transportation and risk COVID-19 exposure.
Lifestyle: Netflix is bringing Queer Eye to Germany in March 2022 with Queer Eye Germany. The American reboot of the original 200 Bravo show, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, will introduce a new “Fab Five” cast who will help members of the public turn their lives around. The cast includes Ayan Yuruk, David Jakobs, Leni Bolt, Jan-Henrik Scheper-Stuke, and Aljosha Muttardi, all of whom have their own lifestyle specialties. Especially for Yuruk, he will set a precedent with his role on the show; he told PinkNews: “I can be the role model that I never had as a gay Turk.”
Andy Cohen, The Real Housewives reunion host, has said that the hiring process for the show “needs some work.” Over the past few years, Cohen has had some difficult conversations with celebrities on Bravo who have done or said inappropriate things on and off-screen. Recently, Bravo had to fire Jennie Nguyen from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City for racially insensitive comments she made in the past. Currently, Cohen is working with Bravo to find cast members through a more “informed” and “thoughtful” process to prevent hiring people with such controversial pasts.
