Hard Numbers: Will 'Supermarket Sweep' Be Renewed For A Third Season?

ABC

Contestant: ABC’s revival of Supermarket Sweep, hosted by comedian Leslie Jones, saw a significant drop in ratings from season 1 to season 2. Season 2 averaged a 0.37 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.308 million viewers. In great contrast, season 1 garnered a 0.70 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.19 million viewers. ABC made some changes from season 1 to season 2 that made it easier to win money for contestants. While this could make for a more satisfying audience experience, it separated the show further from its 1960s counterpart. For those who watch for their love for the original Supermarket Sweep, these changes may not have been favorable. There has also been a backlash against host Leslie Jones for what some call her “loud” and “sassy” attitude, but in the same vein, there have been positive reviews for her enthusiasm. As such, it is unclear what changes Supermarket Sweep needs to make for a successful third season—but first, it needs to be renewed.

FOX’s sixth season of The Masked Singer, hosted by Nick Cannon and featuring panelists Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong, and Robin Thicke, saw a steady decline in ratings, producing a -50.40% demo change and a -37.40% viewer change. Despite these numbers, it is still FOX’s most-watched show. This status gives it a cushion for its likelihood of renewal for a seventh season.

ABC

Informative: As of December 2021, Good Morning America is still television’s most-watched morning show for the 10th year in a row with its largest lead in the ratings over NBC’s Today in five months. However, it has seen a decline in the ratings from the year-ago week as of December 13, 2021, shedding a -3% in the key demographic and -9% in the average total viewership. This hasn’t changed its lead over other morning shows, and this drop could be attributed to the general decrease in ratings for cable news shows in 2021. The momentous political climate of 2020 caused the ratings to soar, so a dip in the ratings in 2021 is not a huge surprise. However, it is currently too early to tell whether audiences will return in 2022 to hold the numbers steady.

Docuseries: Season 18 of The Bachelorette starred Michelle Young, the franchise’s third POC bachelorette and the first to have two bi-racial final contenders. It was released quickly after the culmination of season 17, which could account for the drop in ratings between each season. Season 18 averaged a 0.65 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.890 million viewers, and although viewership increased following the premiere, the demo ratings were down for an average of -29.15%. Although the season finale garnered a franchise low in the ratings, it was the night’s highest-rated program, still finding success for ABC.

The Real Housewives of Orange County saw some initial success between seasons 15 and 16, but since then it has dropped in the ratings. Although season 16 opened with only 936,000 viewers and 0.23 in the 18-49 demographic, the second episode’s ratings shot up to 1,024,000 viewers and a 0.34 demo rating. However, the rest of the season’s ratings have lowered, averaging a 0.278 demo rating and 894,000 viewers. These ratings are lower than most of season 15’s, and although many were relieved when controversial housewife Kelly Dodd was removed from the show, it hasn’t largely impacted the show’s ratings.

Netflix

Streaming: Single’s Inferno is a Korean reality TV dating competition released on December 18, 2021. The ratings so far have been relatively good with an audience score of 7.3/10 on IMDb. Recently, the show came under fire for comments some contestants made about skin color; however, it’s likely these issues stem from translation imperfections and a general misunderstanding of the traditional Korean standard for beauty. Despite this controversy, the audience score for the show’s first season has remained steady. Single’s Inferno is currently streaming on Netflix.
