Receipts: James Wan's 'M3GAN' Premier's Second At The Box Office & Avatar Sequel Close To Reaching $2 Billion

Domestic: Four weeks after the film's December 16 release, Avatar: The Way of Water earned an impressive $45 million domestically over the January 6 weekend. The Disney and 20th Century Studios distributed sci-fi epic has currently earned over $1.730 billion worldwide, making it the seventh highest-grossing film in history— a title previously held by 2015's Jurassic World. The sequel starring Zoe Saldaña is proving very popular at the international box office, earning (so far) $1.19 billion overseas and $517 million domestically. At this rate,  Way of Water is more likely to reach the $2 billion mark that James Cameron alluded the film needed to 'break even' in terms of profit.

On M3GAN's opening weekend, the James Wan and Blumhouse Production's horror internet sensation kicked Univeral's Puss in Boots: The Last Wish off its second-place spot at the box office. The PG-13 thriller about a homicidal animatronic doll was made on a $12 million budget and grossed $30.2 million domestically during its opening weekend and $15.2 million internationally. Overall,  M3GAN grossed $47.9 million worldwide in its first week. Speculations of a sequel are already being discussed.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the fifth film of the Shrek Cinematic Universe, is proving successful at the international box office earning $112 million overseas as of January 9. The Dreamworks Animation film starring Salma Hayek and Antonio Bandera has currently earned $89.25 million domestically over three weeks in theatres. Over the January 6 weekend, placing third in ticket sales, the film grossed $13.5 million. The film's worldwide box office total is currently $210.26 million.

Sony's A Man Called Otto is rumored to be a sleeper hit. The film took fourth place among the top box office winners on its second official weekend of release. The film's first weekend had a very limited theatrical release on December 30, with four theatres only reportingly playing the film and earning $56,267. Over the January 6 weekend,  the film expanded to 637 theatres and grossed $4.2 million domestically. Otto is also proving itself successful overseas, grossing $8.4 million internationally. The film's cast includes Mariana Treviño, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Tom Hanks, and filmed with a $50 million budget.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has remained a staple at the box office since its release nine weeks ago. The superhero spectacle starring Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Tenoch Huerta, and Lupita Nyong'o is the final theatrical release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe phase four. The Marvel Studios film grossed over $3.5 million domestically over the January 6 weekend, bringing the film's current worldwide box office total to $826.38 million.  

International: The Narrow Road, known as Dzaak lou mei tsan in its domestic territory, is a Hong Kong Cantonese-language drama film released widely on December 22 but had its world premiere at the  Edinburgh International Film Festival on August 19. The film's cast includes Louis Cheung and Angela Yuen, and it has reportedly currently grossed $451,699 worldwide.

Drishyam 2 is an Indian Hindi-language crime thriller continuing to profit since its November 18 domestic release, grossing US$43 million worldwide. The film starring Ajay Devgn is the second highest-grossing Hindi film of 2022 and premiered in the top ten of many international box offices.

Streaming: Netflix acquired the film distribution rights in most of North and South America for the Columbian coming-of-age drama, The Kings of the World (Los Reyes Del Mundo). The film is directed by Laura Mora and has been watched for over 3.9 million hours since its January 4 streaming release. The film currently holds the number four spot on Netflix's Global Top 10 list for non-English films.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery spends its third consecutive week as the number-one film on Netflix's Global Top 10 List with no sign of slowing down. The film has self-reportedly been watched over 253.7 million hours since its December 23 release making it one of Netflix's most-watched originals. The whodunit sequel to 2019's Knives Out includes Janelle Monáe and Leslie Odom Jr in its ensemble cast with a budget of $40 million and is produced by the T-Street Production Company
