Motion Picture: Tracee Ellis Ross Joins 'Candy Cane Lane' and Raúl Castillo Joins Psychological Horror Thriller
Action/Fantasy/Sci-Fi The first trailer for Sick, a satirical pandemic-era horror film, has dropped. The trailer gives viewers a look at The Craft: Legacy’s Gideon Adlon and Trim Season’s Bethlehem Million as they play best friends that head to a remote cabin during the COVID-19 quarantine. However, their attempt to escape from the stressors of the pandemic proves futile when they find themselves being stalked by a killer. Directed by John Hyams and written by Scream’s Kevin Williamson, Sick will begin streaming on Peacock on January 13th, 2023.
Comedy With Netflix’s release of the full trailer for You People, audiences get a glimpse at the dynamics between Jonah Hill’s character Ezra, and his girlfriend’s father, Akbar, played by Eddie Murphy. The trailer depicts Ezra and Amira, Ezra’s girlfriend played by Lauren London, and their first encounter, as well as Akbar’s response to Ezra’s request to marry his daughter: “You can try.” Growing tensions and awkward conversations between the two families take precedence in this comedy directed by Kenya Barris. You People will stream on Netflix on January 27th, 2023.
Candy Cane Lane, an upcoming holiday comedy, has added Tracee Ellis Ross to a cast that already includes Eddie Murphy and Nick Offerman. Directed by Sidney’s Reginald Hudlin, Candy Cane Lane is one of three films in production with Murphy’s deal with Amazon Studios. Although plot details are currently being kept under wraps, the film is currently shooting in Los Angeles and is based on writer Kelly Younger’s holiday experiences as a child. Candy Cane Lane will be released on Prime Video, although it is unclear when.
Drama Open House, a psychological horror thriller, will star El Cid’s Alicia Sanz and The Inspection’s Raúl Castillo. The horror drama follows a realtor, presumably played by Sanz, and her night of terror when her “deranged” client appears at an open house. Open House was written and directed by David Charbonier and Justin Powell and has wrapped filming in Los Angeles. It is unclear whether or not the film will have a theatrical release.
Monica Raymund, Lance Reddick, Griffin Dunne, Elizabeth Anweis, Lewis Pullman, Francois Battiste, and Gabe Kessler will complete the cast of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. They will star alongside Keifer Sutherland, Jake Lacy, and Jason Clarke, whose involvement in the film was announced previously. The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial will follow the story of the United States Navy as they are on trial for mutiny, as based on the 1951 book of the same name, but will be told from a modern perspective. Raymund has been cast as Challee, Reddick as Captain Blakely, Dunne as Dr. Bird, Anweis as Dr. Lundeen, Pullman as Lieutenant Keeferm, Battiste as Captain Southard, and Kessler as Junius Urban. The film’s release date is currently unknown.
Documentary Friday Night Lights director Peter Berg has commented on the much-anticipated unreleased Rihanna documentary, stating that the film is finished, “done and sold, and Amazon’s ready.” However, the only thing preventing its release is Rihanna herself, as “she’s a perfectionist, so we keep adding.” However, Berg assured fans that he was not concerned about Rihanna not greenlighting the release. The untitled documentary has been in the works for over six and a half years and does not currently have a release date. As of 2019, the crew had over 1,200 hours of footage.
Industry Updates Byron Allen’s HBCU GO has promotionally partnered with the film Freedom’s Path, which stars The Harder They Fall’s RJ Cyler and 1917’s Gerran Howell. Accompanied by the release of the film in theatres on February 3rd, HBCU GO is launching HBCU GO Give 365, which is a “community giving initiative intended to inspire and engage the Black community to lean in and provide much-needed funding to HBCU higher learning institutions.” To do this, they will invite students and other members of the HBCU community to see the film in theatres across the country and will donate a percentage of ticket sales to HBCUs that support and encourage art.
