Motion Picture: Victoria Mahoney, Laverne Cox
Action: A stand-out female director is preparing to make a love letter to 90’s action movies. Victoria Mahoney is in talks to direct Kill Them All, an adaption of the Kyle Stark’s graphic novel of the same name. The story follows a murderess and a boozy cop teaming up to defeat a crime lord. Mahoney made history with her role of second-unit director for The Rise of Skywalker. She was the first women and the first person of color to hold the position in the Star Wars franchise. James Coyne penned the script while Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec are producing.
Comedy: Two former co-stars are teaming up for an action-packed comedy. Awkwafina and Karen Gillan from Jumanji: The Next Level will be starring in the upcoming Shelly. The movie revolves around a former high school reject turned hit women who ends up having to protect the women who bullied her. Jude Weng will direct while Michael Doneger and Liz Storm handle the script.
Documentary: Netflix acquired the rights to a film putting the trans community in front of and behind the camera. Laverne Cox and Angelica Ross are two of the trans women featured in Disclosure, a Sam Feder directed doc putting a spotlight on the transgender community in television and film.
Drama: A movie with a timely message is becoming available to stream. Just Mercy, the Warner Bros flick about civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson will be free to rent in June. The action comes on the heels of Blackout Tuesday, a social-media movement designed to amplify the voices of black leadership amongst recent protests. The studio stated they wish to make the movie available to anyone who wants to learn about systemic racism in America. Just Mercy stars Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson.
Horror: A horror remake will be Crypt TV’s first Indian movie. Chhori will be the group’s first film after partnering with Abundantia Entertainment to make more Indian content. The movie is a remake of Lapachhapi and original star Nushrat Bharucha will return. Original writer and director Vishal Furia will also return. Chhori tells the story of old societal beliefs that lead to terror.
Industry: A new executive will oversee live-action films for two popular studios. Syrinthia Studer was hired as the EVP of Nickelodeon and Awesomeness Films. She will run all live action projects for both label’s Kids & Family Studio. Studer is set to develop movies targeted at Generation Z.
Andre Holland is being represented by a new agency. The Moonlight actor recently signed with WME. The actor has also stared in Selma, A Wrinkle in Time and High Flying Bird.
