Global Flicks: Teaser Revealed For Bollywood’s New War Film ‘Pippa’; Camila José Donoso Prepping For 4th Film ‘Antitropical’; India’s Eros Media World Partnering With Arabia Pictures Group
Africa: Meta Cinema Forum Africa is taking place in Ghana, this November. The convention aims to bring investors, filmmakers, and distributors under one roof to discuss new ways of expanding the African film industry. The project was birthed from the partnership between the National Film Authority of Ghana (NFA) and the Great Minds Group. The Great Minds Group is based in the UAE and annually runs the Meta Cinema Forum in Dubai. The dates for the convention are November 21-23.
Asia: Ponniyin Selvan is set to be the first Tamil film in IMAX. From the mind of Rani Matnam and based on a classic Tamil novel of the same name, Ponniyin Selvan: 1 is set in 10th century South India and follows the life of the great Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola. The cast includes Bollywood royalty Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Vikram. The film will release on September 30th and is being developed as the first of a major trilogy.
The teaser for Bollywood’s new war epic Pippa has been unveiled. Pippa chronicles the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 that led to the formation of Bangladesh. It is directed by Raja Krishna Menon (Airlift, 2016) with A.R. Rahman scoring and Ishaan Khatter (A Suitable Boy, 2020) leading the cast as Captain Mehta of the 45th Cavalry Tank Squadron. The title Pippa is a nickname of a powerful Russian tank that operated during the conflict and alludes to the heavy tank warfare that the film will center around. Latin America: Camila José Donoso is in pre-production for her upcoming film Antitropical. Produced by Niña Niño Films, the fictional documentary follows Suzy teaching her Colombian friend Deisi about sex work in Chile. The film combines real people with actors and will start shooting entirely in 16mm in October after garnering financial support from Chile’s Audiovisual Production Fund. Expect the film sometime late next year.
Middle East: India’s Eros Media World is partnering up with Arabia Pictures Group (APG). The union aims to develop the entertainment industry in Saudia Arabia by coproducing upcoming Bollywood films and distributing them through MENA territories. The partnership derives from the Saudi Arabian government investing over $6.9 billion in the local film industry under the banner of its Vision 2030 plan. The plan aims to develop new economic revenue streams outside of the booming oil industry.
