The First Annual TheGrio Awards

TheGrio, an American television network and website with news, opinion, entertainment, and video content geared toward Black Americans, recently announced its inaugural TheGrio Awards. The ceremony aims to celebrate notable people across film, music, comedy, television, sports, philanthropy, business, fashion, social justice, environmental justice, and education, as well as cultural icons and innovators “whose many contributions positively impact America.”

Sheryl Underwood and Taye Diggs will cohost the ceremony, with a special guest musical performance by Patti LaBelle. The ceremony will take place on October 22, 2022, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. It will air on November 5, 2022, on TV stations around the country, as well as on TheGrio Television Network and other Allen Media Group television and digital platforms.

The honorees are as followed:

  • Cultural Icon Award: Dave Chapelle

  • Justice Icon Award: Ben Crump

  • Television Icon Award: Queen Latifah

  • Champion Award: Norman Lear

  • Business Icon Award: Don Peebles

  • Icon Award: Tyler Perry

  • Philanthropy Award: Robert F. Smith

  • Comedy Icon Award: Kenan Thompson

  • Young Icon Award: Alena Analeigh McQuarter

  • Sports Icon Award: Allyson Felix

  • Music Icon Award: Patti LaBelle
