The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) released its list of the top ten films of 2022. Those films are as follows (in no specific order):

  • The Woman King

  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

  • Till

  • Sidney

  • Emancipation

  • Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

  • Inspection

  • Causeway

  • Everything Everywhere All at Once

  • Wendell & Wild

  • Devotion

The AAFCA is the world's largest group of Black film critics that gives various annual awards for excellence in film and television. When asked about the lineup, the AAFCA President and co-founder Gil Robertson responded:

“The best films of this year prove that diverse stories – the true and the fantastical – are not only important to the culture but are equally important to the movie-making business. Black films which make an impact on our minds and hearts are also making a sizable impact at the box office. Our top film, The Woman King bridges the gap between telling important, heartfelt stories, and providing an entertaining experience for movie-going audiences. These true tales of Black empowerment and accomplishment, such as Emancipation, Devotion and Sidney, as well as fantastical tales such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Wendell & Wild invite us to experience underappreciated pieces of history along with our own imaginings.”

The Asian-centered film Everything Everywhere All at Once is both a celebration of diverse representation, storytelling, and the legacy of Michelle Yeoh.

The AAFCA will honor the best in film in 2022 with their list on January 16, 2023, for the following categories: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Breakout Performance, Best Independent Film, Best Foreign Film, Best Documentary, Best Writing and Best Ensemble. An in-person gala for the 14th Annual AAFCA Awards will also be held on March 1st, 2023.
