No Press Conferences For 2023 Golden Globes
On Friday, October 21, 2022, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced that it will not hold press conferences for any movies or TV shows that are eligible for the 2023 Golden Globe Awards this coming January.
In early 2021, the practice of the Globes holding news briefings for HFPA members came under scrutiny due to allegations in a Los Angeles Times exposé that outlined inadequacies with transparency and diversity, revealing the lack of Black members, unethical conduct, and suspect financial practices. Actors spoke up about the intrusive questions they had to endure at the press conferences, which had been expected of everyone who desired a chance at winning. At the end of 2021, the HFPA made a change when then-interim CEO Todd Boehly unveiled a reform plan stating that news conferences would no longer be necessary. It's important to note that participation at HFPA press conferences was never necessary to be considered for a Golden Globe.
The 80th annual Golden Globes will air live on NBC (as well as Peacock) after a year-long break caused by the HFPA. The HFPA board last month approved the continuation of the rules implemented for last year's scaled-back awards-giving, including that there would be no mandatory movie screenings and that submissions of movies and TV programs will remain voluntary for eligibility. These changes included increasing and diversifying voting membership as well as amending its bylaws.
Nominations for the 2023 Globes will be revealed on December 12, 2022, with the awards ceremony taking place on January 10, 2022, at the Beverly Hilton.
