Netflix Submits The Dark Comedy ‘Beef’ As Limited Or Anthology Series For Emmys

Netflix and the creative teams behind the dark comedic series Beef have decided to seek Emmy Awards candidacy as a limited or anthology series rather than a comedy, as many commentators expected. The series, starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, premiered on the streaming platform on April 6, 2023, to positive reviews from critics and audiences. The show currently has a 99% approval rating from critics and a 92% approval rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Created by Lee Sung Jin, known for writing and producing HBO’s Silicon Valley, Beef was revealed in March 2021 and commissioned by Netflix as an anthology series. The decision to switch to limited does not lessen Beef’s comedic impact. The Television Academy classified limited or anthology programs in 2021 as stories that must be concluded within the season, with no continuous storylines/cast permitted.

Beef will also enter additional categories, including supporting actors Danny Choe, Joseph Lee, and Young Mazino. According to experts, nominations for directing and writing are also possible. Many people are hoping that the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards would follow in the footsteps of the 95th Academy Awards, which had a record-breaking night for Asian filmmakers and actors. The Emmys have shown progress in Asian representation in recent years, but critics claim the organization still has work to do.
