HFPA Adds 215 New International Voters To The Golden Globes
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) recently announced that the voting body for the 81st Golden Globe Awards will be expanded by 215 international voters.
The additional overseas voters join the 95 current member voters, bringing the total number of voters for the upcoming edition of the awards to 310. The HFPA asserts that the rise in voter registration exceeds its pledge to expand the size and diversity of the voting body. Following the Los Angeles Times exposés on the HFPA's demographics and behavior, this commitment has resulted in a slew of reforms.
According to the HFPA, the voting body currently represents 76 countries, including new international voters from Cameroon, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Serbia, and Tanzania. According to the organization, 58% of the voting population is ethnically diverse, with the following ethnic breakdown:
25% Latino/a
14% Asian
10% Black
9% Middle Eastern
42% White.
Additionally, the HPFA says that at least 17% of the voting body self-identifies as LGBTQ+.
Pursuing transparency, the HFPA announced that international electors residing outside the United States should have verified entertainment journalism clippings from worldwide media channels such as print, broadcast, radio, photography, and online. The HFPA Credentials Committee, made up of a majority of outside, independent journalism and entertainment industry professionals, vetted and qualified these applications. The HFPA's new international voters will be subject to the Golden Globe Awards Code of Conduct, as per protocol.
The 81st Golden Globe Awards will take place on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024.
