It was announced on Thursday, December 1, 2022, that veteran African American actor, director, and producer Angela Bassett had been chosen to receive the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Montecito Award. The award, named after a popular area in Santa Barbara, is given to individuals in the entertainment industry who have made a great contribution to film.

Bassett is most well-known these days for her portrayal of Wakandan Queen Mother Ramonda in Marvel’s Black Panther franchise and for her role on the Fox TV series 9-1-1. With many Oscar and Emmy-nominated projects under her belt, she is set to be the 38th recipient of this achievement award. The festival's executive director Roger Durling asserted his respect and admiration for Bassett’s craft, praising her commanding performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Angela Bassett will receive the honor following a career-retrospective conversation at the Arlington Theatre on Thursday, February 9, 2023. The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will run from February 8-18, 2023.
