The Box: Netflix Drops Trailer For ‘Ludik’; Disney+ Unveils Trailer For First Turkish Original Series; Terapin Studios Acquires Toomics Global

Africa: The trailer for Netflix’s first Afrikaans TV series Ludik has dropped. Starring Arnold Vosloo (Silverton Siege, 2022), the story follows a successful furniture salesman forced to put his diamond smuggling business at risk to save a member of his family. The trailer depicts high-intensity action and a seedy underworld that will span over six, hour-long episodes. See the show on August 26th. 

Gcine Mkhize jumps on board the cast of Imbewu. She is a fan favorite for her role in Isibaya, earning her the SA Film and Television Award for Best Supporting Actress. In Imbewu, she will portray the witness of a hit-and-run murder. Catch her new appearance on Thursdays at 9 pm on e.tv starting on July 29th. 

Dineo Langa is set to leave the cast of The Estate. She portrayed Mmakoena Molefe for the past two seasons of the series as well as the opening moments of season 3 this summer. A statement was issued that clarified she would be pursuing other creative interests. Season 3 premiered this July and continues to move forward with ease and anticipation.

Asia: Thai Cave Rescue Netflix series set to release in September. Multiple studios have competed over developing portrayals of the international incident that put the lives of 12 boys and their coach at risk in a cave-in. Amazon’s MGM studios have backed Ron Howard’s film titled 13 Lives starring Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, and Joel Edgerton. The entirety of the film was shot in Australia and will release in theaters at the end of July as well as on Prime Video on August 5th. The Netflix series will tackle a more grounded and authentic approach by filming in Thailand on location and at the homes of the actual soccer players. It will be led by Thai directors Nattawut ‘Baz’ Poonpiriya (Bad Genius) and Kevin Tancharoen (The Book Of Boba Fett).  

Webtoons producer Toomics Global has been acquired by Terapin Studios. For $160 million, Terapin Studios bought the South Korean Webtoons developer. The company has been steadily rising in popularity ever since it formed 15 years ago, designing vertical comic strips designed to easily scroll through on smartphone devices. 

Middle East: The trailer for Disney+ Turkey’s series Dünyayla Benim Aramda (Between The World And Me) has been released. The series’ announcement follows Disney+ debuting in Turkey this past June. The series was created by Pinar Bulut (Ezel) and follows a woman who toys with social media to sustain her failing relationship. The cast is led by Demet Özdemir (My Home, My Density). Expect the show to premiere later this fall.

Europe: Turkish star Can Yaman is set to star in an upcoming Italian TV series titled Viola Come Il Mare. The story has been pitched as a comedic-crime series. Can Yaman will star as officer Francesco Demir alongside Francesca Chillemi who will play the reporter Viola, his partner, and possible love interest. The series will premiere this September on Canale 5.
