The Box: Netflix Presents New Lineup of Nigerian Films and Series

Africa: The DStv will produce first local telenovela, Sibongile & The Dlaminis. The series will star Siyabonga Shibe, Ayanda Borotho, and Zodumo Shange. The story is described as a Cinderella story with a forbidden romance. It will be produced by Rhythm World Productions and is adapted from the popular Zambian story “Zuba and the Solalas.”

African streamer Showmax and Canal+ have released a trailer for the eight-part gangster and extreme sports drama Spinners. The series will be directed by Jaco Bouwer (Gaia) and follows a 17-year-old driver working for a gang who discovers a possible way out of gang life by performing daredevil stunts. The cast includes Cantona James (Arendsvlei), Chelsea Thomas (Arendsvlei), Elton Landrew (Recipes for Love & Murder), Dillon Windvogel (Blood & Water), Brendon Daniels (Zulu, Five Fingers for Marseille), Dann Jaques Mouton (Arendsvlei, Noem My Skollie), David Isaacs (Joe Barber), and Katlego Lebogang (Wounds). The drama will premiere across sub-Saharan Africa on Showmax on November 8 and launch on Canal+ in Africa on November 13.

MultiChoice Group launched the streaming service Showmax in South Africa eight years ago and has expanded to 44 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the service available in more than 30 international markets. Showmax has prided itself on original content catered not only for national audiences but for those internationally including in London, Philadelphia, and Hollywood. MultiChoice and Comcast’s entertainment arm NBCUniversal and its London-based European pay-TV unit Sky struck a partnership that promises to bring the world’s best content customers across sub-Saharan Africa. Showmax relaunch is scheduled to happen before the end of March 2024.

Netflix reveals a lineup of Nigerian Films and Series:

The Black Book is a mystery and crime thriller directed by Effiong in partnership with Anakle Films. The film will star Sam Dede, Alex Usifo Omiagbo, Olumide Oworu, Shaffy Bello, Ireti Doyle, Taiwo Ajayi Lycett, Ikechukwu Onunaku, Patric Doyle, Bimbo Manuel, Femi Branch, Denola Grey, Kelechi Udegbe, and Nobert Young.

Blood Vessel centers around six friends as they embark on a voyage to South America as stowaways on a ship. The story is directed by Moses Inwang and produced by Agozie Ugwu, Arafat Bello-Osagie, and Roxanne Adekunle-Wright. The film stars David Ezekiel, Adaobi Dibor, and Jide Kene Achufusi.

Ijogbon is a coming-of-age film that follows four rural kids in South-West Nigeria who find a trove of diamonds, setting off a chain of events. The film is directed by Kunle Afolayan and produced by Golden Effects Pictures, the film casts Ruby Akubueze, Kayode Ojuolape, Oluwaseyi Ebiesuwa, Fawaz Aina of Ikorodu Boiz, Yemi Solade, Gabriel Afolayan, and Bimbo Manuel.

Aníkúlápó is a four-part spinoff of the Yoruba epic Aníkúlápó. Kunle Afolayan returns to direct and stars including Sola Sowobale, Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Owobo Ogunde, Gabriel Afolayan, Lateef Adedimeji, Eyiyemi Afolayan, Uzee Usman, Oyinda Sanni, and Taiwo Hassan.

A brand-new drama series unfolds as a spinoff from the popular Sons of the Caliphate called Wrath and Revenge (WAR). WAR chronicles Nuhu Bula's ascent to the gubernatorial throne of Kowa. The cast includes Mofe Duncan, Rahama Sadau, Yakubu Mohammed, Patrick Doyle, Ayoola Ayolola, Ifeanyi Kalu, Theresa Edem, Bikiya Graham Douglas, Daniel Okosun, Maikudi "Cashman," Mickey Odeh, Sophia Muhammed, Uzee Usman, Padita Agu, and Ahide Adum.

Following the success of the Òlòtūré film, Mo Abudu's EbonyLife Studios is set to create a series of the same name that delves into the realm of human trafficking.

Crime thriller series To Kill a Monkey is written, directed, and produced by Kemi Adetiba alongside Remi Adetiba and will star William Benson and Bucci Franklin, Bimbo Akintola, Chidi Mokeme, Dami Adegbite, and Ireti Doyle.

Asia: Bollywood production house T-Series is making a web series with crime thriller Kaala for Disney+ Hotstar. The series was created and will be directed by Bejoy Nambiar. The series stars Avinash Tiwary, Rohan Vinod Mehra, Nivetha Pethuraj, Taher Shabbir, and Hiten Tejwani. The story follows an Intelligence Bureau officer solving a case that involves criminal masterminds. The series will stream exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar in India and Hulu in the U.S. later this year.

Moving has become the most watched Korean original on Disney+ globally and Hulu in the U.S. The series also became the most watched on Disney+ across Asia Pacific, including Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
