Broadcast: Bell Media has recently purchased a majority stake in Sphere Abacus, a UK-based distributor that helps independent producers with pre-sales, development financing, and broadcaster commissions. It’s led by Managing Director, Jonathan Ford, who is known for selling shows such as the documentary Leaving Neverland (2019), the Channel 5 miniseries Catch You Later, and Travels with Agatha Christie & Sir David Suchet (2025).
Sean Cohan, the President of Bell Media, said in a statement to Deadline that this purchase is part of a larger plan to improve content and distribution. Their aim is to create successful international programming that has a Canadian touch and to combine its programming with Sphere Abacus’ library, expanding it by at least 5,500 hours worth of content.
Last year, Canadian production company Sphere Media, Canada's fourth largest independent producer and led by Bruno Dubé, completed a C$24.6 million deal with the distributor Abacus. This agreement resulted in the formation of Sphere Abacus. Although Bell Media previously held a small stake in Sphere Media, the merger has given them a majority stake in Sphere Abacus’ business. Ford expressed that his deal will allow the distributor to expiate its acquisitions and collaborate with a broader range of international producers. Additionally, Cohan mentioned a project referred to as "Northern Lights." Although it's not yet clear what all “Northern Lights” entails, its goal is to establish new international partnerships and to globally elevate Canadian talent and content.
Bell Media, a subsidiary of BCE Inc., has a hand in many television networks. Including CTV television network, Noovo (their French network), The Sports Network, and Reseau Des Sports, both of which cover sports, and their streaming service Crave. Bell Media has also entered the development stage of agreements with Point Grey, Lionsgate, as well as Tom Green’s production company and Elliot Page’s Pageboy label.
Cohan remarked, “A big part of this is ensuring that we partner with the best in the business, regardless of their location—whether they are in Canada, London, LA, or New York. Some of the best creatives in the world are Canadian, and it’s about working more closely with them.” Cohan also noted that the marketing narrative should also focus on Canada's talent and creativity.
“I believe Canada, not just Bell Media, faces a marketing challenge. The Canadian creative community has produced a wealth of great content and stories, but it doesn’t always receive the recognition it deserves. As the largest commissioner and acquirer of content in Canada by a wide margin, we feel a responsibility here.”
Cohan and his team are currently meeting with executives in Los Angeles to strengthen their relationships.

This past Monday, March 24th, BBC Ink finalized a new agreement with Equity, the UK’s actor union. The agreement will ensure that performers working on BBC TV productions will receive higher pay rates, provisions for bullying and harassment, and better practices regarding audition tapes.
The agreement will be enforced come April 7th, 2025, and will only cover actors, supporting roles, dancers, singers, stunt performers, and puppeteers working on in-house BBC dramas, comedies, and children's shows. Currently, Equity is negotiating a separate set of agreements with ITV, a British public broadcasting network, and Pact.
A few key points to note is that the new agreement will increase an actor's episode fees by 13% as well as an increase in production costs and overtime fees, it will also introduce a weekly fee of a minimum of 10%. Additionally, the agreement will impose penalties for late royalty payments and will include specific provisions for minors.
Natalie Barker, an Equity TV Official stated, “With this agreement, the BBC makes vital commitments to our members that their experience at work will be safe and dignified”. She emphasized that securing a pay increase was crucial for Equity TV’s members, especially in light of rising inflation.
The UK's actors' union, Equity, along with the British Association Directors UK, is up in arms over the recent cancellation of BBC’s Scottish drama River City. Equity’s General Secretary, Paul Fleming, described the cancellation as “short-sighted” and “a disaster for Scottish television.”
River City has been on air since 2002, portraying the “domestic and professional lives of residents in the fictional district of Shieldinch in Glasgow”. The long-running drama has received several awards, including the RTS Scotland Drama Award (2023), the Great Scot Award for Entertainment, the Scotland Variety Award for Best New Scottish Actor or Actress, and the Mind Media Award.
Although the series is scheduled to end next year, Louise Thornton, the Head of Multiplatform Commissioning of BBC Scotland, has already announced plans for three new dramas: Grams, The Young Team, and Counsels. This development follows a pattern of recent cancellations of other long-running shows. However, the BBC has committed to investing over $102 million in Scottish dramas between 2026 and 2028.
Fleming has emphasized that canceling River City would have a devastating impact on acting and production roles. He highlighted that the industry is challenging to break into, especially for those from working-class backgrounds. Directors UK Chief Executive Andy Harrower echoed this sentiment, noting that it has been extremely difficult to secure enough work to make a living in the industry in recent years. Despite these concerns, the BBC has stated that remaining and future funds will be allocated to other Scottish productions.

The Stay In LA campaign was created to encourage more productions to be based in Los Angeles, partly due to the wildfires that burned a significant portion of the city—approximately 55,000 acres. To put it in perspective, that’s equivalent to about 2,200 Alcatraz Islands or 500 Disneyland theme parks. Quite a lot of land, right?
Los Angeles is known for its iconic productions, including Boyz n the Hood (1991), La La Land (2016), Us (2019), and the series Insecure (2016-2021). However, maintaining production in LA has been a challenge for some time. Many industry professionals have opted to film in other states or even abroad, according to the organizers of Stay In LA. Sarah Adina Smith, director of The Midnight Swim (2014) and Birds of Paradise (2021) has called the situation “an existential issue.”
CA United, the organization behind Stay In LA, is hosting a rally on April 6, 2025, where industry leaders, union representatives, community members, and more will gather to speak in support of the movement. Organizers are expecting hundreds of attendees to support the petition, which will allow them to voice their thoughts, concerns, and plans for rebuilding the city. While they want to maintain LA as the heart of the entertainment industry, they also want to offer and receive real solutions to preserve jobs.
So far, the group has proposed removing the cap on tax incentives for productions that shoot in and around LA County, as well as eliminating restrictions on boosting short-form production, such as commercials and YouTube shorts. These changes would reduce permit fees and lower production costs while also addressing insurance concerns.

The comedy series will be written by Capó Crucet, who has already begun constructing the pilot for the project. The phrase “say hello to my little friend” is one of the most well-known lines in film history, first delivered by Al Pacino who played “Tony Montana” in the film crime film Scarface (1983).
Say Hello to My Little Friend will follow “Ismael Reyes”, a failed Pitbull impersonator who dreams of becoming the “King of the 305” (the area code of Miami). He strives for money, power, and respect which he believes will come with the title of “King”.
Crucet's career began in 2009 with the release of her short story collection, How to Leave Hialeah, which won multiple awards, including the Iowa Short Fiction Prize and Best Book of the Year. She is also the author of other well-known books, including Make Your Home Among Strangers ( 2015), My Time Among the Whites: Notes from an Unfinished Education (2019), and Fourteen Days: A Collaborative Novel (2024), in which she collaborated with many other authors such as the well known Margaret Atwood. After three seasons, Max has decided not to renew The Sex Lives of College Girls for a fourth season. This series follows four roommates as they explore their newfound freedom while attending college and has been praised as a “lesbian coming-of-age” story. The show was co-created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble.
The decision not to renew the series came as a surprise to the creators. While Kaling has chosen to take a back seat on overly commenting on the matter, Noble shared his thoughts on Instagram, stating, “Unfortunately, Max has decided not to order a fourth season. We are currently in discussions with some new potential homes for the show, and it's nice that there is so much interest.” He also noted that the series was one of the most-watched shows on the platform for around 70 consecutive days.
Although both creators are disappointed by the cancellation, they are looking ahead.
Mindy Kaling is known for her work on The Mindy Project (2012) and as the voice of “Velma Dinkley” in the adult animated sitcom "Velma" (2023). She gained recognition for her time on the mockumentary sitcom The Office (2005), where she was one of the writers and played the character “Kelly Kapoor.” In addition, she provided the voice for "Disgust" in the animated film Inside Out: Mind Candy and portrayed "Mrs. Who" in Disney's A Wrinkle In Time alongside the acclaimed Oprah Winfrey.
Netflix will soon release a sequel to the popular 80’s comedy sitcom, A Different World, which surprisingly will be the first in the history of the series.
It’s been hinted that the plan is to film the pilot at the beginning of summer to gauge the show’s tone and the chemistry of the cast. Currently, no cast members have been selected.
Netflix doesn’t plan on following a traditional pilot season as broadcast networks do, where shows compete for a limited number of slots. Netflix typically avoids a conventional pilot process, having only announced its first-ever pilot order in 2023. Instead, they focus on straight-to-series or script-to-series deals unlike its competitor, Hulu who typically delivers episodes, instead of the entire series.
Skipping a pilot can be a large risk for Netflix. Whereas a show may sound like a good idea, many factors can prevent it from being favorably received by its audience, making it hard to justify a full series.
Netflix has influenced both broadcast networks and other streaming outlets in its tendency to pick up series’. In the past, dozens of pilots competed for attention on broadcast networks, but currently, fewer than ten pilots are in development across the Big Four networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox).
Originally, A Different World began as a spinoff of The Cosby Show. It was to follow Lisa Bonet’s character “Denise Huxtable” as she attended the fictional historically black “Hillman University”. After Bonet left the series following its first season, the storyline changed to focus on Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison’s characters, “Whitley Gilbert” and “Dwayne Wayne”.
A Different World sequel was first reported in August 2024. The new series is set to return to “Hillman College”, and will follow the daughter of the original characters.
Felicia Pride (Queen Sugar) is set as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Debbie Allen (The Cosby Show), Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), and Reggie Bythewood (Swagger) will also serve as executive producers. Werner produced the original show through The Carsey-Werner Company, while Allen produced and directed many of the original series' 144 episodes.
