Ratings Report: ‘Umbrella Academy’ Reigns, ‘Power Book II: 'Ghost’ Struggles

Cable: The fourth season of the TV drama series Power Book II: Ghost is back from its mid-season hiatus, having released its mid-season premiere on September 6th. This sixth episode was met with a struggling audience that dropped by 33% from the previous weeks before the mid-season break. Power Book II: Ghost was only able to gross an audience for P2+ households of 170,000 which is in stark contrast to how the series started off in June with an audience of 206,000 for its first episodes of the season. The P18-49 demographic gave the mid-season premiere a rating of 0.4. Often times series with a mid-season break, like Power Book II: Ghost, will see some troubles starting back up after a break. They may not retain their same numbers they had at the start of the season, which is looking more the case with this series. It has also been announced that there will be no fifth season of Power Book II: Ghost and its inability to retain its original audience could be due in part to this.

Power Book II: Ghost follows Tariq St. Patrick, played by Michael Rainey Jr. (Power, Amateur), as he's forced to grapple with the death of his father, drug operations, family and his love life. The series also stars Paige Hurd (Everybody Hates Chris, Beauty Shop), Latoya Tonodeo (Fast & The Furious, The Perfect Match), Alix Lapri (Downsized, Den of Thieves), Sydney Winbush (Amityville Poltergeist, Timmy Failure), Michael Eely (2 Fast 2 Furious, Almost Human), Woody McClain (The Harder They Fall, Death of Telemarketer), and Method Man (How High, Soul Plane).

Streaming: Netflix's original series Umbrella Academy, based on Gerard Way’s graphic novel series, released its fourth and final season on August 8th. A week after the series’ final season premiered, the series still holds its ground on the Nielsen Top Ten Streaming list with 1.39 billion minutes watched between August 12th and August 18th. However, the Rotten Tomatoes score tells us a different story, with a divisive critic score of 55% and an audience score of 18%. This is in comparison to the series’ introductory season in 2019, which had a critic score of 77% and an audience score of 85%. The first season also saw some of the highest viewership numbers of the series, reaching a high of 2.5 billion minutes viewed within its first two weeks. There is a stark contrast between Umbrella Academy season one and season four, with some Rotten Tomatoes reviewers reacting to how strongly the show started off in comparison to its final season failing to end the series properly. It’s possible Netflix already recognized the series declining viewership based on season two and season three’s performance.

Umbrella Academy is about a group of seven siblings who possess special traits and were all adopted on the same day of birth by an eccentric industrialist. Following his death, the seven siblings reunite and try to unlock the mystery behind their connection to each other and deal with mysterious forces. The series stars Aidan Gallagher (Jacked Up), Elliot Page (Juno, Inception), Tom Hopper (Game of Thrones, Terminator: Dark Fate), Robert Sheehan (Mortal Engines, Geostorm), Ritu Arya (Feel Good), David Castañeda (Sicario: Day the of Soldado, End of Watch), Mary J. Blige (Nina, Empire), and David Cross (Alvin and the Chipmunks, Arrested Development).
