Ratings Report: The Umbrella Academy Returns

Broadcast: Approaching its last finale, ABC’s Marvel series Agents of SHIELD averaged 1.28 million total viewers and 275,000 viewers in the age 18 to 49 demographic, both slightly below the season averages. How will Agents of SHIELD wrap up its 7-season run? We will find out on August 12’s two-episode series finale. 

Cable: Over at Showtime, The Chi was seeing a continuing increase in the month of July. However, its latest episode on August 2 saw a 20.95 percent drop in total viewership and 16.67 percent drop in the demo. With previous episode had the highest ratings in this season, the past two weeks still averaged 470,000 total viewers and 165,000 demo viewers, way above the season averages. HBO’s popular series I May Destroy You took a hit on July 27. The episode had the lowest total viewership in the history of the series. In the past two weeks, I May Destroy You averaged 30,000 demo viewers and 94,500 total viewers. OWN’s Greenleaf also saw its season peak on July 28 with the highest ratings in both demo and total viewership. Greenleaf averaged 330,000 demo viewers and 1.353 million viewers in the past two week, well above season averages with one more episode left in the season. 

International: Korean drama viewership average ratings for the week of August 3 to 9 are as followed: Once Again (KBS)-33.2%; Backstreet Rookie (SBS)-8.2%; It’s Okay to Not Be Okay (tvN)-6.9%; The Good Detective (JTBC)-6.4%; Graceful Friends (JTBC)-4.5%; Flower of Evil (tvN)-3.4%; United Effort to Accomplish One Thing (MBC)-3%; Memorials (KBS)-2.8%; Was It Love (JTBC)-1.7%; Train (OCN)-1.3%.

Both Backstreet Rookie and It’s Okay to Not Be Okay finished their final episodes on a high note. Flower of Evil is a new series seeing an increase to 3.7 percent this week. 

South African July Television ratings are available. At SABC1, Uzalo dominated the chart with 8,846,070 viewers, followed by Generations the Legacy with 7,369,897 viewers. Skeem Saam took the third place with 7,180,171 viewers. At SABC2, Muvhango landed top with 4,013,359 viewers, while 7De Laan gathered a viewship of 1,872,503, followed by Lithapo with 1,736,360. Scandal remains the most viewed series at eTV with 4,833,032, closely followed by Imbewu with 4,042,388 viewers, and Rhythm City with 3,928,498 viewers. Over at DSTV, Uyajola 9/9 became the most viewed series with 1,432,630 viewers, bumping The Queen to the second place with 1,402,203 viewers. The River attracted 918,287 viewers, landed fifth place at DSTV.

Streaming: The Umbrella Academy returns for a second season on a lighter tone, without compromising its emotional core. This season, the siblings surf through time, leaving the audience with an exciting time-traveling journey to go on. Although superficial at times, it is a  joy to watch. Nothing takes away the fact that this is a better rounded season of character development and performance from a stellar cast. The second season of The Umbrella Academy achieved a high rating of 90% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes.
