Ratings Report: Summer Slowly Coming To A Close

Broadcast: During the past two weeks, ABC’s Grand Hotel found a steady increase in viewership. An intial 0.55 percent increase compared to the previous week brought the shows viewership to 2.39 million. Episode 11 saw a larger 3.72 percent increase viewership which made the viewer count 2.48 million. The hot summer show’s finale will occur on September 9th as the network moves into fall programming. 

Cable: Keeping up with OWN’s summer shows is the best thing you can do for summer. David Makes Man saw a rather large decrease in viewership compared to its premiere. A 20.86 percent decrease led to a total of 435,000 viewers compared to the 537,000 viewers during its premiere. Thankfully, episode three had an 8.47 percent increase culminating in a total viewership of 461,000. Queen Sugar had an 11.54 percent decrease compared to the previous week. Episode 10 season 4 had 1.020 million viewers. This past week’s episode had a much smaller decrease of 0.29 percent. This decrease left episode 11 with a total of 1.017 million viewers. Ambitions continues to heat up with a 12.48 percent increase from the previous episode. Episode 10 had 739,000 viewers. This past week’s episode had a small increase of 7.04 percent which led to a total viewership of 791,000. 

SABC 1

International: According to TVSA’s monthly ratings for July, the SABC 1 telenovela Uzalo came out on top once again with 10.857 million viewers. The reigning telenovela was followed closely by Generations: The Legacy which maintained a strong second place with 9.57 million viewers. Skeem Saam followed in third with 7.837 million viewers. The continuing champion of SABC 2 is Muvhango with 5.339 million viewers. The soap 7De Laan lost its second place, falling into third place with 2.587 million viewers. E TV’s three top performing dramas saw a bit of shift this month. Scandal maintained its first place position with 6.168 million viewers. Losing its second place position, subsequently falling into third is Imbewu: The Seed with 4.520 million viewers. Coming in 4th place is Rhythm City with 4.501 million viewers. 

Television dramas in Korea have maintained moderate viewership over the past two  weeks. The top shows in Terrestrial TV (KBS2, MBC, SBS) are as follows: Doctor John-7.6%, Golden Garden-7.0%, Rookie Historian Goo Hae-Ryung-5.6%, Justice-5.6%, Welcome 2 Life-4.4%, Doctor Detective-3.5%, I Wanna Hear Your Song-2.8%. 

The top cable TV (JTBC, OCN, tvN) are: Hotel Del Luna-9.4%, Designated Survivor: 60 Days-5.8%, Watcher-5.8%, Class Of Lies-3.7%, Moment At Eighteen-3.4%, When The Devil Calls Your Name-2.0%, Be Melodramatic-1.5%. 

Streaming: Netflix has dropped the official trailer for the reboot of Top Boy. The trailer gives a lot more exposition compared to the trailer, but maintains its gritty dreamlike aesthetic. The stakes have never been higher. Top Boy premieres on Netflix September 13th.
