Ratings Report: ‘Sistas’ moves up for Cable, ‘Fallout’ Leads Streaming

Broadcast: Across ABC, NBC, CBS, The CW, and FOX, broadcast raked in 22.2% of audiences in April. Down 3% from the previous month, the NCAA Women’s Championship game on ABC was the highest-viewed program on broadcast television. In other news, drama accounted for 29% of broadcast’s total viewing, led by shows such as Young Sheldon on CBS and Chicago’ on NBC. Furthermore, sitcoms like the recently canceled series Not Dead Yet on ABC were successful in their respective demographics. On April 24, Not Dead Yet had a demo of .22 and a total viewership of 2.153 Million viewers for the 18-49 demographic. Not Dead Yet stars Gina Rodriguez (Jane The Virgin, Miss Bala, Players, Awake), Lauren Ash (Superstore, Super Fun Night), Hannah Simone (New Girl, Single Parents), Rick Glassman (Undateable, As We See It), and Josh Banday (Upload, That Girl Lay Lay).

Cable: Of all television watched during April, 29.1% occurred on cable. Cable was the only subset of television to increase its viewership during April, likely propelled by the increasing popularity of women's sports, in particular the NCAA championships.Cable’s 0.8% increase in viewership was also assisted by the NBA Playoffs and the NFL draft. Four of the six top viewed programs were related to the women's NCAA playoffs. Despite gaining an audience this past month, cable television still follows a downward trend. Since April 2023, viewing comparisons show a decline of 8.2%. 


Most recently over on BET, Sistas has exploded with a 9% increase in audience with nearly a million viewers. Sistas is written and directed by Tyler Perry and stars KJ Smith (Fatal Affair, The Family Business), Crystal Hayslett (Zatima, Praise This), Angela Beyince (If Loving You Is Wrong), Devale Ellis (Zatima, Vish Merrick), Trinity Whiteside (Love Karma), and Ebony Obsidian (Wu-Tang: An American Saga, Hunters), and follows a group of single black women as they navigate modern life. 

Streaming: Streaming garnered 38.4% of the total audiences in April, according to Nielsen's most recent data. Disney+ led in streaming platforms, gathering 11.5% of the total audience. Amazon Prime found success as well with Fallout. As the most viewed show across all streaming platforms, Fallout set a record as the platforms most successful series to date; the series brought in over 15% of the total minutes watched across all streaming platforms. Furthermore, the series was recently renewed for a second series. The post-apocalyptic series follows a video game franchise by the same name. Fallout stars Ella Purnell (Arcane, Yellowjackets, Army of the Dead), Aaron Moten (Father Stu, Disjointed, Emancipation), and Walton Goggins (The Righteous Gemstones, Sons of Anarchy, Invincible)

Japan: Outside of the western sphere of media, Japan’s Kanto region saw a high rate of viewership. Across all genres, drama reigned supreme with The Tiger And Her Wings, which brought in 16.8% of the average household rating. This totals to a whopping 20.81 million viewers for the drama series. The series premiered on April 1st and stars Sairi Ito (Hiyokko), who plays Japan's first female lawyer in the 1930s. 


Anime brought in significant numbers as well. The most popular series for the genre was Mr./Mrs. Sazae (Sazae-san) from Fuji TV. The series garnered 7.6% of average household ratings. The series is the longest running anime series of all time, having premiered in 1969. Bringing in roughly 9.4 million viewers, Mr./Mrs. Sazae stars Midori Katō (Sally The Witch), Hiroshi Masuoka (Soreike! Anpanman, Dragon Ball GT), Ichirô Nagai (Wicked City, Baoh), and Takako Sasuga (Astro Boy, Danganronpa)

Drama series such as Beauty and Mr. Romantic, Connection, and Lovely Runner carried the ratings in South Korea. On June 2nd alone, Beauty and Mr. Romantic brought in 8.44 million viewers, a whopping 17.2% of the total household viewership. The series stars Im Soo-hyang (Inspiring Generation, Graceful Family, Doctor Lawyer), Lee Young-eun (Home for Summer, Summer Whispers), and Ji Hyun-woo (Queen And I). Beauty and Mr. Romantic follows an enthusiastic rookie producer who falls in love with a struggling actress down on her luck and sets out to get her life back on track. The series premiered on March 13th,to rave reviews and currently holds an 89% from Google’s audience reviews.

United Kingdom: In the U.K., Red Eye, Britain's Got Talent, and Race Across the World led the ratings from the two primary broadcaster groups, ITV and BBC. The No. 1 show, Red Eye, overperformed the second highest show by over 1.3 million viewers this past week. In second place, Race Across the World acquired 5.55 million viewers. Red Eye premiered on April 21st to mixed reviews, including a 57% audience score from Rotten Tomatoes. Red Eye stars Lesley Sharp (Scott & Bailey, Before We Die), Richard Armitage (Fool Me Once, Obsession), Jing Lusi (Crazy Rich Asians, Heart Of Stone, Gangs Of London), and Jemma Moore (Lockwood and Co., Flashback, Host).
