The Box: Amazon Has Upcoming Japanese TV Slate; New Workplace Comedy ‘Blockbuster’ Headlined By Cuban Stars; South African Soapie ‘Scandal!’ Premieres Its 20th Season

Africa: Disney+ has set the dates for its release in South Africa. The streaming juggernaut will launch on May 18th for all the territory. This announcement was delivered alongside the news that they would expand on to Israel on June 16th and many other nations by the end of summer 

Popular e.tv series, Scandal! aired its 20th season on April 1st.  The drama-rich soapie carries on with its 17th year as a fake pregnancy is pressured into a real one and an eerie case of human trafficking develops.

Asia: Anubhav Chopra is locked in as lead writer for new Indonesian series Dirty Laundry for SinemArt. Details have not yet been revealed for the project however it is being described as a action/crime thriller. Anubhav is known for co-directing the Netflix India docu-series House Of Secrets: The Burari Deaths. There is currently no release date for the upcoming series.  

Alexander Uloom - IMDB

Middle East: Israeli network HOT’s will premiere DreaMars next year. The live-action series follows a group of teenagers flying to Mars in hopes of building settlements. Filming will take place in Israel’s first ever space simulation center that models Mars.  

Alexander Uloom has signed with Hyperion and House of M. Uloom is in pre-production for the upcoming Iraq series Broken Diamond. His recent success derives from his work in the 2021 series The Surrogate Mother.  

Melissa Fumero - Albert L. Ortega

Latin America: Netflix is launching a new workplace comedy series titled Blockbuster. The cast is glowing with Cuban stars including Melissa Fumero (Encanto), Olga Merediz (In The Heights), and Tyler Alvarez (Never Have I Ever). Fumero will be playing a mother that begins working in the last Blockbuster store in America. A release date has not yet been announced.  

Narcos Producer Gaumont is signing a major production deal with Paramount+. The long-term slate deal guarantees Gaumont’s reputable oversight on upcoming European and Latin American projects. Besides Narcos, Gaumont is known for producing Lupin as well as Barbarians.

Europe: Julien Paolini’s upcoming film Karma has officially entered post-production. The story follows a police officer struggling with an accidental murder on duty. This will be Paolini’s second feature film, coming off the success of his debut film Amare Amaro, which won the Grand Polar Prize in 2018. The film stars Syrus Shahidi who was also in Amare Amaro and Karidja Touré who earned a nomination for Best Newcomer César in 2015 for her performance in Girlhood.
