Reality Beat: Chance The Rapper Joins ‘The Voice’ As Coach, And ‘Glee’ Docuseries In The Works

Docuseries: A new docuseries exploring the controversies of Glee is coming to Discovery +. Fox’s Glee ran for six seasons from 2009 to 2015, spawning a hit first-of-its-kind musical teen drama comedy. The show made instant stars of Amber Riley, Naya Rivera, Harry Shum Jr and Alex Newell. The series was so popular among younger audiences that it spawned albums and a live tour. However, with its significant success came controversy and tragedies amongst the cast and crew. Most notably, the deaths of cast members Naya Rivera, who died by drowning in 2020, and Corey Monteith, who died of a drug overdose in 2013. Mark Sailing also died by suicide in 2018 following his arrest for possessing inappropriate images involving child abuse. Comments of on-set bullying among the cast, specifically Lea Michele towards her POC cast members, have also been circulating for years. The untitled three-episode docuseries by Ample Entertainment will interview the cast and crew from the series and dive deeper with a behind-the-scenes look.

Docusoap: Dropping the official teaser trailer, Netflix announced a Bling Empire spin-off set in New York City. The series will follow New York’s wealthiest Asian Americans, including Dorothy Wang, a cast member in Bling Empire’s second season, Hong Kong fashion stylist Tina Leung, founder of modeling agency Dreamodels Deborah Valdez-Hung, and Hong Kong business magnate Stephen Hung.

Game Show: The Game Show Network and Dish Networks have settled into a multi-year deal restoring the channel after being taken down on September 6 after initial negotiations failed. “We are happy to have entered into a long-term agreement with Dish, and that Dish customers can resume watching their favorite shows on Game Show Network for years to come,” said Tim Carry, EVP of Distribution for Game Show Network.

Competitive Series: RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race wrapped its second season on VH1. The spin-off centers on mystery stars receiving drag makeovers by past Drag Race competitors and competing for a chance to win prize money for a charity of their choice. Some of the identities of the mystery stars are Loretta Devine, Jenna Ushkowitz, Daniel Franzese, Tatyana Ali, Mark Indelicato, and AJ McLean.

Two-time Emmy-winning comedian Loni Love is named co-host of CW’s Criss Angel’s Magic with the Stars. In every episode, two celebrity guests will train with illusionist Criss Angel to compete and create a series of magic performances in front of a panel of judges. The celebrity guest lists consist of Miles Brown of Black-ish, Cynthia Bailey of Real Housewives, Flavor Flav, and Corbin Bleu of High School Musical. The competitive series premiers on October 22 on the CW.

Chance The Rapper joins season 23 of The Voice as a coach alongside Kelly Clarkson and Niall Horan. The Grammy-winning rap artist said, “I’m thrilled to join The Voice as a coach for the next season,” “I’m excited to help other artists get to the next level and make the most of this life-changing experience. Get ready for #teamchance.” Season 23 will premiere on Fox in Spring 2023.

Host Julie Chen Moonves announced season 25 of Big Brother on her Twitter. Julie has hosted the series since its debut in 2000 and will premiere season 25 Summer of 2023. Fly on the Wall Entertainment, associated with Endemol Shine North America, produces the competition series.

Willie Spence, the runner-up of American Idol’s season 19, died in a car accident in Tennessee at 23. Spruce competed in the 2021 season, coming second to Chayse Beckham. The official American Idol Twitter page released a statement saying, “We are devastated about the passing of our beloved American Idol family member, Willie Spence. He was a true talent who lit up every room he entered and will be deeply missed. We send our condolences to his loved ones.”  Spence’s cover of Diamonds by Rihanna incredibly impressed judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan— receiving a standing ovation from Richie, calling him an “undeniable star.”

Lebron James - the shop: uninterrupted /HBO

Lifestyle: The Shop: Uninterrupted is an online talk show series starring Maverick Carter and LeBron James. The show premiered on HBO in 2018 but moved to YouTube for its fifth season in 2022. The series recently pulled an episode featuring an appearance by Kanye West. West has been in controversies lately, and Carter has stated the show has decided not to air the episode. Carter said, “We have made the decision not to air this episode or any of Kanye’s remarks. While The Shop embraces thoughtful discourse and differing opinions, we have zero tolerance for hate speech of any kind and will never allow our channels to be used to promote hate.”

DJ Envy’s Property Players is coming to A&E for the cable network’s Home Made Nation lifestyle block. Grammy-winner Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, alongside Lionsgate TV, produced the series as follows DJ Envy investing in properties, flipping homes, and mentoring the community together. DJ Envy is a hip-hop producer, musician, real estate investor, and entrepreneur who co-hosts the nationally syndicated radio show The Breakfast Club.
