Receipts: 'Snow White' flounders in a weak weekend for the domestic box office

Domestic: Snow White, released Friday, March 21, 2025, dropped from the number one to the number two spot at the box office with a weekend gross of $14.3 million. With a budget of around $240 million, the film has only grossed a total of $144.1 million setting it up to be a box office bomb.

The film, a live-action remake of the Disney classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), stars Rachel Zegler as the titular princess and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The film currently has a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Zegler’s performance being praised and Gadot’s performance being widely panned, along with the story changes and uneven effects.

Snow White has also been rooted in controversy since Zegler, a Latina actress, was cast as Snow White — a character who has historically been depicted as White. This is similar to the controversy around Disney’s casting of Halle Bailey, a Black actress, as Ariel in the 2023 remake of The Little Mermaid. Criticism was rooted in the alleged “woke” casting of a classic fairytale; despite this, The Little Mermaid made well over its $240.2 million budget with a total gross of $569.6 million.

The Woman in the Yard, released Friday, March 28, 2025, opened at the number four spot with an opening gross of $9.3 million. With a budget of $12 million, the film is likely to make back its budget despite mixed reviews, with a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mickey 17, released Friday, March 7, 2025, dropped from the number five spot to number nine at the box office, grossing $1.9 million with a worldwide gross of $121.3 million. Novocaine, released Friday, March 14, 2025, took the number 10 spot at the box office with a gross of $1.4 million. The film has grossed $28.6 million worldwide against a $18 million budget, underperforming despite an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
