Receipts: ‘Scream VI’ Scores Big For Its Franchise & ‘Shazam!’ Sequel Debuts At Number One

Domestic: Shazam! Fury of the Gods premiered on March 17 and grossed $30.1 million on its opening weekend. The DC superhero film debuted at number one at the box office, removing Scream VI from the first-place spot after one week. The sequel’s cast included Rachel Anne Zegler, Lucy Liu, Meagan Good, Ross Butler, and Djimon Hounsou and had an estimated $100–125 million budget. As of March 23, the film had grossed an estimated $36.6 million in domestic territories and an additional $34.6 million internationally, for a total of $72.2 million worldwide.

Scream VI, distributed by Paramount Pictures and produced by Radio Silence Productions, debuted at number one at the box office the weekend of March 10. The film grossed $44.4 million, a record high for the film’s 26-year-old  franchise. The slasher horror film sees the return of Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding alongside new cast members, including Devyn Nekoda and Tony Revolori, and Josh Segarra. Scream VI grossed an additional estimated $17.4 million its sophomore weekend and was moved to second place by the Shazam! sequel. By March 23, the film had earned $121.5 million worldwide, with $81.5 million being made domestically and $40 million at the international box office, and made with an estimated budget of $33-35 million.

Creed III, directed by and starring Michael B. Jordan, earned an additional $15.4 million on March 17 after three weeks of its theatrical release. Alongside Jordan, the film’s cast features Jonathan Majors, Tessa Thompson, Selenis Leyva, Wood Harris, and Canelo Álvarez, and was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures. Since its March 3 release, it has grossed $130.4 million domestically and $96.3 million internationally, for a total of $226.7 million worldwide as of March 23.

The science fiction and action film 65 was released by Sony Pictures on March 10 and premiered third at the office. The film earned $12.3 million on opening weekend and an additional $5.8 million on its second weekend of March 17. 65 was made with a budget of $45 million and stars Ariana Greenblatt, Chloe Coleman, and Nika King. As of March 23, it’s earned an estimated $24.6 domestically and $16.4 internationally, totaling $41 million at the worldwide box office.

Champions premiered for theatrical release on March 10 alongside Scream VI and 65. The film grossed $5.2 million on its opening weekend and an additional $3 million on its sophomore weekend of March 17. Champions grossed $12 million domestically and $1.5 million internationally as of March 23.

International: The Mandarin-language Chinese comedy film Post Truth earned $17 million over the March 10 weekend in mainland China earning it the top spot at the box office. As of March 23, the film has grossed an estimated $59.4 million. Post Truth is directed and co-written by Chengpeng Dong and stars Dong,  Xueqin Li, and Zheng Yin.

Based on the novel The Murder in Kairoutei (Kairōtei Satsujin Jiken) by Keigo Higashino, Revival is a Chinese Mandarin-language crime thriller film with a cast that includes Suxi Ren, Mintao Liu, and Ke Hu and was directed by Mukuan Lai. As of March 24, the film has grossed $25.2 million since its March 10 release, placing in second place to Post Truth.

Streaming: Released by Netflix on March 10, Luther: The Fallen Sun is a crime thriller film starring Idris Alba and Cynthia Erivo, based on the British television series of the same title. Since its release two weeks ago, the film has remained number one on the streaming service’s weekly most-watched top ten list. From March 6 to 19, the film was watched for over 135.4 million hours.

In His Shadow is a French thriller film released for streaming by Netflix on March 17. The film was written and directed by Marc Fouchard and includes Kaaris, Alassane Diong, and Carl Malapa as part of the cast. Since its release, the film has been streamed over 8.6 million hours on Netflix.
