Receipts: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Scores Big Opening Weekend and ‘Dungeons & Dragons” Begins to Dwindle at the Box Office

Domestic: Chukwudi Iwuji made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, released exclusively in theatres on May 5 and debuting at number one at the box office. The Marvel Studio’s film is the second installment of the MCU’s Phase Five releases with a returning cast including Zoë Saldaña, Pom Klementieff, and Dave Bautista. On opening day, Guardians Vol. 3 earned $48.2 million domestically, including Thursday pre-screenings on May 4. As of May 7, the film grossed $114 million domestically (US and Canada) and $168 million internationally, totaling $282 million worldwide. The film was estimated to gross $110 million domestically on its opening weekend.

Also released on Cinco de Mayo weekend was the romantic-comedy Love Again, starring Priyanka Chopra. Made on a $9 million budget by Sony Pictures, the film grossed $1.9 million on its opening day, including Thursday’s pre-screenings. As of May 7, the film earned $2.4 million at the box office, debuting in fifth place.

Six weeks after its March 31 theatrical release, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves begins to lose steam at the box office. The film grossed over $1 million at the box office every Friday since its release until May 5, when it only grossed $372,000. As of May 7, D&D has grossed $91 million domestically and $111 million internationally, for a total of $202 million worldwide— beating its $150 million budget, making the film a financial success. The high fantasy film’s cast includes Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Chloe Coleman, and Regé-Jean Page, and was distributed in part by Paramount Pictures.

Originally released on April 7, AIR by Amazon Studios grossed an additional $1.3 million over the May 5 weekend. The film experienced a 65% decrease in ticket sales compared to the $4 million it grossed on the weekend of April 28. As of May 7, AIR grossed $50.2 million domestically and $34.7 million internationally, totaling $84.9 million worldwide. The Air Jordan’s shoe line origins film’s cast includes Marlon Wayans, Chris Tucker, Chris Messina, and Viola Davis, and was filmed with an estimated $770-90 million budget.

At number five at the weekend box office of May 5 was John Wick: Chapter 4. As of May 7, the action film, released by Lionsgate with a $100 million budget, has grossed $180 million domestically and $226 million in other territories, for a total of $406 million worldwide seven weeks after its release. The film’s cast includes Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Lance Reddick, Donnie Yen, and Rina Sawayama.

International: Born to Fly, released in China on April 28, is a military action film about pilots in the People’s Liberation Army Airforce, also known as the Chinese Air Force. The film, directed by  Liu Xiaoshi, grossed $44 million on its premiere weekend, with a reported $4 million made in IMAX screenings. Born to Fly’s cast includes Yibo Wang, Jun Hu, Dongyu Zhou, and Yosh Yu.

The Kerala Story is an Indian Hindi-language film centered around a group of women from Kerala, India. The film’s cast includes Siddhi Idnani, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Adah Sharma. Released on May 5, the film grossed ₹8.03 crore ($982,507) in India, surpassing the earnings of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, released on the same day.

Streaming: The romantic comedy A Tourist’s Guide to Love was released on Netflix on April 21. The film stars Scott Ly in the lead role and was directed by Steven K. Tsuchida. Since its release, the film was reportedly watched over 34.3 million hours on Netflix. As of May 7, the film holds an average 69% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 16 reviews.

Queens on the Run, also known as Fuga de reinas, is a Mexican comedy film directed by Jorge Macaya and stars Martha Higareda, Paola Núñez, and Valeria Vera. The film was released for streaming by Netflix on March 29. As of April 10, the film has spent three weeks on the Global Top Ten List for non-English films after being watched for over 29.3 million hours.
