Receipts: ‘Fast X’ Premiers Early Screening Numbers And ‘Guardians 3’ Hits Over $200M

Domestic: Fast X enters the box office with $7.5 million domestically from early Thursday screening previews. By Friday, May 19, the film grossed $28 million domestically (US and Canada) and $32 million internationally. The tenth installment in the Fast and the Furious saga was predicted to earn $58 million on its premiere weekend, with Universal Studio expecting $60 million. Fast X is reportedly the most expensive film in the franchise, and estimates claim the action film will need to haul around $850 million at the box office to profit on its budget of $340 million. The action thriller’s cast includes Vin Diesel, Jason Mamoa, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, and Rita Moreno.   

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 premiered on May 5 with a first-weekend debut of $118.4 million domestically. Since then, the Marvel Studios film has grossed $242.9 million in the US and Canada and $315 million internationally, totaling $557 million worldwide as of May 19— on a $250 million budget. The third installment’s cast has many Guardians returning, including Zoë Saldaña, Pom Klementieff, and Dave Bautista, with Chukwudi Iwuji making his Marvel cinematic debut.

The Robert Rodriguez film Hypnotic debuted in sixth place at the box office after grossing $2.4 million on its opening weekend of May 12—reportedly the worst opening for a film by Rodriguez. The action science fiction film, starring Ben Affleck, Alice Braga, JD Pardo, and Dayo Okeniyi, was made with a $65-$70 million budget, distributed by Ketchup Entertainment, and produced partly by Solstice Studios.

International: Godspeed (Rén Shēng Lù Bù Shú), directed by Xiaoxing Yi, is a Chinese road-trip comedy released internationally on April 28. As of May 19, the film has grossed $128 million worldwide. The film’s cast includes Yuan Chang, Chengcheng Fan, and Li Ma.  

The Kerala Story, released on May 5, is an Indian Hindi-language drama film starring Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani. Filmed on an estimated ₹15–20 crore (US $1.8–2.4 million) budget, the film has been a success grossing est. ₹218.05 crore (US$27 million) as of May 18.

Streaming: Netflix’s The Mother with Jennifer Lopez, Lucy Paez, and Omari Hardwick clocks in 83.7 million hours watched in its first week. The action thriller was reportedly watched by 2.8 million viewers in the US over its debut weekend on May 12. Rotten Tomatoes has estimated a 5.1/10 based on 96 critics’ ratings.
