Receipts: ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ Tops at the Box Office and ‘John Wick 4’ Breaks Records For Its Franchise

Domestic: Released on March 31, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves debuted at number one at the weekend box office, earning $37.2 million. The high-fantasy comedy action film is based on the popular tabletop role-playing game of the same name. As of April 4, the heist film has earned $43.6 million domestically and $32.9 million internationally, bringing in $76.5 million worldwide. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was in part distributed and produced by Paramount Pictures with a $150 million budget. The cast includes Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Chole Coleman, and Regé-Jean Page.

John Wick: Chapter 4 topped expectations when its premiere weekend on March 26 grossed over $73.8 million, becoming the best opening weekend for the John Wick franchise. For the weekend of March 31, the film would gross an additional $28.3 million domestically. Since April 4, it has earned $247.1 million at the worldwide box office, with $125.3 million earned domestically and $121.8 million earned internationally. Distributed by Lionsgate Films, with a $90 million budget, the film’s ensemble cast includes Laurence Fishburne, Donnie Yen, Lance Reddick, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Rina Sawayama.  

Premiering at number three at the March 31 weekend box office was His Only Son. The biblical drama created with a $250,000 budget is distributed by Angel Studios and grossed $5.5 million during its opening weekend. As of April 4, the film has earned $6.8 million domestically and $32,079 internationally. The producers crowdfunded over $1.23 million for the film’s distribution, making it the first nationwide theatrical release to be crowdfunded. The film stars Nicolas Mouwad, Sara Seyed, and Dan de Silva.

Scream VI holds a solid fourth place domestically at the March 31 weekend box office, grossing $5.3 million four weekends after its premiere. As of April 4, the film has grossed $99.5 million in domestic territories and $54.5 million internationally, for a $154 million worldwide total. The slasher film is distributed by Paramount Pictures and produced by Radio Silence Productions with an estimated budget of $33-$35 million and a cast including Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Devyn Nekoda, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding.

Released theatrically on March 31, A Thousand and One grossed $1.72 million from 926 movie theatres during its opening weekend. The film was released alongside Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and His Only Son playing in 3,855 and 1,920 theatres, respectively. A Thousand and One stars Teyana Taylor, William Carlet, and Josiah Cross, written and directed by A.V. Rockwell. The mystery drama film has grossed $2.1 million as of April 4.

International: Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari), a 2022 Japanese animated fantasy film, was released theatrically in China on March 24 and earned $22.58 million on its opening weekend. Since its release, it has grossed $82.27 million in China, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film released in the country. The film is scheduled to be released in North America on April 14. Suzume was written and directed by Makoto Shinkai and stars Nanoka Hara and Hokuto Matsumura.

One month after its release, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar becomes the fourth highest-grossing Indian film of 2023. The Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy stars Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. As of April 6, it has grossed $21 million in India and $5.9 million internationally for a worldwide total of $27 million.

Released on March 31, Hachiko earned $9.01 million on its opening weekend, debuting at number two at China’s box office. Since its release, the film has grossed $10.6 million. Directed by Angu Xu with Joan Chen and Ju-Gang Bai included in the cast, the film’s story revolves around a dog and the family who rescues him.

Streaming: Hulu’s Bruiser, directed by Miles Warren and starring Trevante Rhodes, Shamier Anderson, and Jalyn Hall, was released for streaming on February 24. The film is based on a short film directed by Warren, whose success at the film festival circuit allowed the director to create a feature-length version of the film. The drama film currently holds a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score average out of 22 votes.

Netflix’s Luther: The Fallen Sun, starring Idris Alba and Cynthia Erivo, spends its fourth consecutive week on Netflix’s Global Top Ten list of most-watched films. Between March 20 and April 2, the British crime thriller clocked in 37.4 million hours’ worth of views.
