Receipts: ‘Captain America: Brave’ New World Falls Short At The Box Office
Domestic: Captain America: Brave New World, released Tuesday, February 11, 2025, took the top spot in the domestic box office with $87.8 million. This adds to the film’s worldwide gross of $192.4 million, with a budget of $180 million Captain America: Brave New World is currently underperforming at the box office.
The third film in the Captain America franchise, previously led by Chris Evans who departed the role after Avengers: Endgame (2019) now stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, the new Captain America. Critics pointed out Mackie’s performance and the appearance of Harrison Ford as Thaddeus Ross but heavily criticized the poor visual effects, writing, and misguided and shoddy political commentary. The film currently has a 50% Rotten Tomatoes score and its poor reception is tied to the post-Endgame slump experienced by Marvel Studios where films released after Avengers: Endgame have failed to make an impact with audiences and critics.
Dog Man, released Friday, January 31, 2025, dropped from the number one spot at the box office to number four, taking in an additional $9.8 million. After three weeks in theaters and a budget of $40 million with a worldwide gross of $87.3 million, the film has barely made back its budget.
Released Wednesday, January 29, 2025, Ne Zha 2, the sequel to Ne Zha (2019) opened at number five at the domestic box office, grossing $7.2 million in its first week in the US. With a budget of $80 million, the film has already had a worldwide gross of $1.68 billion, making it the ninth highest-grossing film of all time.
Ne Zha 2 follows demon child Nez ha (Lü Yanting) and his dragon prince friend, Ao Bing (Han Mo) after the events of the first film have left them in a weakened physical state. The film follows their journey to recovery and the obstacles they encounter along the way. The film has a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and has largely gained its popularity through word-of-mouth and social media coverage by audience members.
In its ninth week at the box office, Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) has grossed an additional $4.2 million adding to its worldwide gross of $687.3 million. With a budget of $200 million, the film has continued to be a box office hit for Disney despite its critical panning with a 58% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In its fifth week at the box office, One of Them Days (2025) starring Keke Palmer and SZA grossed an additional $3 million after dropping from number six to number eight. The film grossed $44 million worldwide against its $14 million budget making it a box office success. Despite its low performance, the film has received critical acclaim with a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Released Friday, February 14, 2025, Chhaava took the number 10 spot at the box office. An Indian film based on the life of Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha Confederacy, the film opened to $1.79 million. With a budget of $14.95 million, the film has already grossed $23.6 million worldwide and is expected to continue its success at the international box office.
International: Secret: Untold Melody, released Monday, January 27, 2025, moved from number three to number two at the South Korean box office, grossing $543,350. This adds to the film’s total return of $4.7 million with 8.25% market share.
Hitman 2, released Wednesday, January 22, 2025, dropped from number one to number three at the box office, grossing $461,485 with a total gross of $16.06 million with 7.01% market share. The film is a sequel to the successful South Korean’s, Hitman: Agent Jun (2020). The sequel follows Jun, played by Kwong Sang-woo, who is wrongly accused of a terrorist attack.
The Japanese film, Detective Conan: The Fourteenth Target (1998) was rereleased in Korea on Friday, February 14, 2025, and took the number four spot at the box office with $244, 068 against its total rerelease gross of $275,248 with a 3.71% market share.
Dark Nuns (2025), a supernatural thriller, dropped from number two to six at the South Korean box office with a weekend gross of $133,067. With a total gross of $11.05 million, the film also holds a 2.02% market share. The film is a spin-off of The Priests (2015) which was released to critical acclaim, garnering eight awards for Park So-dam, a supporting actress in the film.
The German film, Elli and Her Monster Team released Thursday, June 27, 2024 took the number seven spot at the Korean box office, grossing $95,524 with a worldwide gross of $1.45 million and a 1.45% market share.
Streaming: Back in Action, a Netflix original film, released Friday, January 17, 2025, took the number two spot after four weeks in the top ten. The film had 9.2 million views and 17.4 million hours watched. Starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, the film follows retired CIA agents who hide off the grid with their children before getting pulled back into a world of espionage. The film was critically panned with a 28% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised Foxx and Diaz’s chemistry but criticized the weak script and direction.
The Shrek films starring Mike Meyers and Eddie Murphy were also in the Netflix top ten. Shrek (2001) took the number three spot with 7.3 million views and 11 million hours watched. Shrek 2 (2004) took the number four spot with 5.5 million views and 8.6 million hours watched. Shrek the Third took the number nine spot with 2.8 million views and 4.4 million hours watched.
