Receipts: ‘Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania’ Debuts At Number 1 And ‘Avatar 2’ Still Profiting Ten Weeks Later

Domestic: Marvel Studio’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania premiered at number one with a $106 million weekend revenue. The film is the third installment to the Ant-Man series, and since its February 17 release has grossed over $287.8 million, making it the third highest-grossing film this year. The draw to the film has been accredited to Jonathan Majors’s long-awaited portrayal of the comic book supervillain ‘Kang the Conqueror.’ Marvel has hinted at Majors’ character as the next big bad in their cinematic universe, implying Majors’ possible involvement in multiple future projects.

The premiere of Ant-Man knocked out Magic Mike’s Last Dance to third place at the box office. The third Magic Mike entry was released by Warner Bros. on February 10 and grossed a total of $8.2 million during its opening weekend. The film featuring Selma Hayek in a leading role opposite Channing Tatum has grossed over $19.8 million domestically, totaling $39.4 million worldwide since its release. The film was made with a $45 million budget.

While the top spot at the box office has shifted with new releases, Avatar: The Way of Water has remained in second place for the last two weeks. Ten weeks after its release, the epic sci-fi sequel grossed $6.5 million over the weekend of February 17, adding to the film’s $2.24 billion it made worldwide. The James Cameron epic features Zoe aldaña and Guyanese-American actress Carol Christine Hilaria Pounder as part of its cast.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has also had a long run at the box office. Nine weeks since its release, the animated sequel placed at number four this last weekend, grossing more than $5.3 million. The DreamWorks Animation film stars Antonio Bandera, and Salma Hayek has proven popular overseas, with the international box office making over $261 million. The film worked with a $90 budget and has been considered a commercial success earning $430 million worldwide.

M. Night Shaymalan’s Knock at the Cabin grossed over $3.9 million on its third weekend at the box office. Since its February 3 release, the thriller has made over $48.5 million worldwide. The film’s cast includes Dave Bautista, most recently in Netflix’s Glass Onion but probably best known for playing Drax in The Guardians of the Galaxy movies by Marvel Studios.

Released domestically alongside Knock at the Cabin was the sports comedy film 80 for Brady. Over the February 17 weekend, the film grossed $3.7 million placing sixth place. The film’s ensemble cast includes Rita Moreno and Billy Porter, and it has grossed $34.2 million domestically since its release.

International: The Chinese Mandarin-language action adventure film, The Wandering Earth 2, was released on January 22. The film is a prequel to its 2019 predecessor and is based on the short story by Liu Cixin and includes Andy Lau, Wu Jing, and Li Xuejian in the cast. The Wandering Earth 2 grossed $578.5 million worldwide at the box office.

Streaming: Netflix’s romantic comedy Your Place or Mine was released for streaming on February 10 and has since topped the streaming service’s Top 10 Global list for two weeks. According to the Netflix list, the film co-starring Jesse William and Zoe Chao, has been streamed over 105 million hours since its release. Rotten Tomatoes scored the film 32%.

In second place in Netflix’s Global Top 10 list for non-English films is the Mexican adventure comedy film All the Places (also known as A todas partes). All the Places follows an estranged brother and sister, played by Aa Serradilla and Mauricio Ochmann, who embark on a motorbike adventure across Mexico to fulfill a childhood dream. The film was released for streaming on Valentine’s Day and has been watched for over 9.9 million hours.

Unlocked is a South Koren Drama Mystery released on Netflix on February 17 and is currently in third place for the most-watched non-English film, being streamed over 8.8 million hours. The film is described as a thrilling story about a woman’s life turning chaotic when a dangerous man uses her cell phone to stalk her. The film’s cast includes Woo-hee Chun and Si-wan Yim.
