Global Flicks: Ranbir Kapoor Attached To New Indian Cinematic Universe; Doha Film Institute Launches Football Filmmaking Challenge

Asia: Ranbir Kapoor teamed up with Ayan Mukerji to helm Brahmastra Part One: Shiva. From Disney’s Star Studios, the film is the opening for a grand scale attempt at a marvel-like universe. This will be titled the Astraverse and revolves around a secret society built to safeguard ancient weapons from Indian mythology. Part 1 will be released on September 9th followed by Part 2 and Part 3 to complete the trilogy. The teaser can be seen here.

The Shanghai International Film Festival has been canceled. It premieres every June but due to COVID spikes, it has been postponed to 2023.  

Middle East: Baghdad Motors has been released on YouTube. The short film follows the lifestyle of the youngest drifter in the region. Nicknamed Hassouni the King, the young boy street races and drifts throughout the film. Carving out a name for himself is no small feat in the war-torn depths of Iraq. The film takes a deep plunge in how the human spirit can sustain itself in the most troubling times. It can be seen here.

The Doha Film Institute has launched its Football Filmmaking Challenge. Partnered with Qatar Football Association with the backdrop of the FIFA world cup being held locally in November, the DFI challenges filmmakers from 18 to 25 to participate in a workshop and produce a short revolving around the sport of football.
