Global Flicks: Popstar Anson Lo Cast In Zombie Flick 'Chungking Mansions'; Gabriel Iglesias Cast In Netflix Animated Film 'I, Chihuahua'; Valentina Maurel Wraps Shooting 'Tengo Sueños Eléctricos'

Asia: Anson Lo has joined the cast of Chunking Mansions. Lo is a member of the Hong Kong pop sensation group Mirror. The zombie film has entered advanced production and features other big names like Davika Hoorne, who is coming off her film Pee Mak, Thailand’s highest-grossing film of all time. Megaton Entertainment is the active sales representative and pitched the movie as The Raid with zombies.  

Kareena Kapoor Khan will be making her Netflix film debut. The film is an adaptation of the award-winning Japanese novel, The Devotion Of Suspect X. Sujay Ghosh (Kahani) is set to direct. The story follows a young girl and her mother who commit a crime and hide the evidence with the help of their neighbor. The project is yet to be titled nor given a release window.  

Director of Eureka, Shinji Aoyama has passed away. His battle with esophageal cancer ended on March 21st. His stellar black-and-white drama Eureka earned him two Cannes awards in 2000. Beyond his successes as a filmmaker, Aoyama was also a celebrated novelist with 11 books to his name. He will be missed.  

Middle East: Zeina Aref debuts her short film Akoon. The film depicts the freedom Egyptian women rightfully deserve. Aref built up to her filmmaking debut after a successful photography career. The film can be seen here on the Nowness Global Website.  

Ely Dagher’s The Sea Ahead‘s release date has been set in April for Belgium and France. The story follows a woman returning to Beirut to rekindle her past life there. This is much darker than Dagher’s debut film m Caramel which premiered at The Cannes Film Festival in 2007. The limited theatrical release comes after the film’s debut last summer at Cannes. The film will release in France on April 13th and on April 6th in Belgium.  

Eugenio Derbez - PATRICK T. FALLON

Latin America: Eugenio Derbez causes Chespirito Project mislead. Using deep fake technology, actor Eugenio Derbez teased his face by portraying the late, great talent Roberto Gómez Bolaños. When officially revealed, it was an ad for DishLATINO. Many took to social media with complaints, hoping for a tv series or biopic. The ad can be seen here.  

Gabriel Iglesias and Jorge R. Gutiérrez are partnering up for a new Netflix animated film. The film is titled I, Chihuahua and chronicles the journey of a chihuahua luchador wrestler played by comedian Iglesias. Gutiérrez is the creator behind Netflix’s animated series Maya And The Three. The project is currently in pre-production.  

Quoc Dang Tran - JOEL SAGET

Europe: Quoc Dang Tran has signed a deal with Universal International Studios. This First look deal promises many upcoming French and English stories. Quoc Dang Tran is the brain behind Disney’s new French series Parràllels and Netflix’s Marianne.  

Valentina Maurel has finished shooting her debut film Tengo Sueños Eléctricos.  The filming took place in Costa Rica. Maurel is a Belgian filmmaker of Costa Rican descent. This is her first feature film after premiering two award-winning shorts at Cannes. The project is entering its first stages of post-production.
