Box Office: Bad Boys, Weathering
Bad Boys for Life, the third film in the Bad Boys trilogy, released on January 17th to 3775 screens across America. In its opening weekend, it grossed a total of $62,504,105. Still going strong, Sony Pictures Releasing’s latest film has now reached a sum of $122,097,654, out of which $83,133,253 was earned domestically. Since Bad Boys for Life is a franchise film starring A-list actors, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in the lead detective roles, its budget had to be a large sum of $90,000,000. The global gross of the film has crossed its budget, and is now earning a profit. If it continues at this rate for the remainder of its theatrical sum, it is projected to be a moderate success.
It has been seventeen years since the last film in the series released, and its poor reviews and moderate profits at the box office were not ideal for a sequel. Therefore, the box office expectations from this film were not high, and there was a fear that the film no longer held any franchise power considering the abysmal performance of the previous film in the series and the length of time that had passed since its release. Yet, the film exceeded expectations. It is doing much better at the box office than was expected, and this is indication that the popularity of the previous films in the series has not died down, and the characters, Detective Marcus and Detective Mike, have become pop culture icons.
This past week also saw the U.S. release of Japanese animated film, Weathering with You. After having a decent run at the Japanese box office last year, earning $125,769,538 over its 13-week run, GKIDS’s latest film opened to 1020 theaters in the U.S. in its first two days, making $1,806,099 in its opening. Over a period of six days, after the number of theaters being reduced to 486, it has grossed a total of $5,275,277. Including the numbers from its international release, this film, written and Directed by Makoto Shinkai, a veteran in Japan’s anime industry, has made $183,863,351 worldwide. Weathering with You is off to a decent start in the U.S box office and seems to be progressing at a steady rate. With no big releases as competition in the next few weeks, the film will probably not see a significant drop in the box office numbers, and should continue at a steady rate.
Box Office Round Up: Just Mercy, which released to 4 screens on December 25, and had a wider release to 2375 screens on January 10, is still running strong. In the two weeks it opened to less screens, it garnered $435,988. Since then the numbers have significantly risen, now amounting to $22,533,274. The film is expected to continue at a steady rate and become a box-office success.
Lionsgate release Knives Out is still raking in high numbers in its eighth week. This film, starring Ana de Armas and Daniel Craig in lead roles, has reached a total gross of $147,875,923. Despite being at a considerably lower rank than when it began, it has still managed to remain in the top 10 at the box office with a rank of 8 in its eighth week.
Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart lead the way in Jumanji: The Next Level, which has become a moderate success after doubling its high budget of $125,000,00 and reaching $275,035,732 in its fifth week. The film will probably have slight drops in the next few weeks, but is still projected to be a box office success.
