Tokyo International Film Festival's Red Carpet Return
For the first time in three years, the 35th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) will begin on October 24, 2022, and run through November 2, 2022, with a fully staffed red carpet. The event has made efforts to recover from the prior two ceremonies, which were somewhat subdued due to the pandemic. Hiroyasu Ando, the festival's chairman, predicted that about 100 visitors and participants from outside countries would attend.
The Kurosawa Akira Award, granted to filmmakers for their contributions to world cinema, will also return to TIFF after a 14-year absence. Previous winners include Chen Kaige, Yamada Yoji, and Steven Spielberg. Following a lengthy stay at the Roppongi Hills complex, screenings of 110 films, up by a third from last year, will now take place around the Hibiya-Yurakucho-Ginza-Marunouchi area. Asia and the Middle East enjoy strong representation in the competition, with 10 of the 15 selected films, 8 of which are world premieres, either hailing from the region or being co-productions with countries from that part of the world.
Ten films from around Asia and the Middle East, all world premieres, will screen in the Asian Future category for up-and-coming directors. Anime will again be celebrated with a mix of new and classic works. Actress Ai Hashimoto will serve as the festival ambassador for the second consecutive year.
