‘The Golden Globes’ Return to NBC Becomes Uncertain

Golden Globes

Reports show that the Golden Globes’ return to NBC’s broadcast has become an uncertainty. A January 2023 broadcast of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association-organized shindig is “not a done deal,” according to a well-placed source. While talks have been going on between the longtime Globes broadcaster and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), no agreement has yet been reached. Some of the detrimental factors affecting the NBC broadcast include the timing of the 2023 Golden Globes on NBC, several dates being up in the air around things like NFL games, concerns about a backlash to a Golden Globes return, and, perhaps most importantly, reforms the HFPA has enacted in response to accusations of inequality.

A six-page letter was sent out to stakeholders on August 15, 2022, which stated: “The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has answered the call for change by restructuring the organization in order to address institutional and systemic concerns.” Unfortunately, despite HFPA’s claims to enact change through meetings with representatives of ethnic and minority groups, the organization has offered few specifics about who and when they met with. In that context, several high-profile actors have requested a mass virtual meeting with the HFPA leadership to seek clarification on the organization’s reforms and plans. A response has yet to be received in response to their request.

While the HFPA has added more than 20 new members in the past year or so, most of its membership retains the membership that was in place as the organization found itself in an inequality scandal. There’s also the complication of the membership proper and the voting members. HFPA President Hoehne and others in the HFPA have been on a PR offensive for the past several months, speaking to industry groups, influential individuals, and others to convince the viewers of the reforms the organization has implemented.
