‘Squid Game’ Dominates The SAG Awards

The 28th annual Screen Actors Awards took place on February 27, 2022. Squid Game managed to receive a total of three awards. In total, people of color took home five SAG Awards for the night. Check out all the POC winners below.

Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Drama Series: Lee Jung-Jae / Seong Gi-hun, Squid Game

South Korean actor Lee Jung-Jae leaves with the award for outstanding performance by a male actor. His worldwide fame with the success of SQUID GAME is due to his portrayal of the character Seong Gi-hun. The actor has a two-decade-long career spanning different roles, and he used his years of experience to his advantage to earn the award.

Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Drama Series: Jung Ho-Yeon / Kang Sae-byeok, Squid Game

For her breakout performance, actor Jung Ho-Yeon managed to snag the SAG award for outstanding female actor in a drama series. Her shedding tears during her acceptance speech shows how much work she put into the role of Kang Sae-byeok. It makes sense for her to have won the award since millions of viewers fell in love with her portrayal of Kang Sae-byeok’s character overcoming life-threatening challenges to save her family.

Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Supporting Role: Ariana DeBose / Anita, West Side Story

Taking home the award for best female actor in a supporting role was Ariana DeBose. Her reinterpretation of the character Anita resonated with today’s new generation of moviegoers. Ariana DeBose thoroughly portrayed issues of colorism and racism within Anita’s Latino community and how it affects the character’s perception of the world.

Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Leading Role: Will Smith / Richard Williams, King Richard

Will Smith offered an emotional acceptance speech for his male lead actor win in a motion picture. His role as Richard Williams is one of the best performances in his entire career. Will Smith’s attempt to properly honor Richard Williams made him go above and beyond in his performance. He was known to practice often in order to match the speaking patterns and movements of Richard Williams while adding his own style of acting.

Outstanding Action Performance By A Stunt Ensemble In A Drama Or Comedy Series: Squid Game

Squid Game managed to beat perceived front-runner Cobra Kai for the outstanding performance by a stunt ensemble in a drama or comedy series award. The wide variety of stunts conducted over numerous sets of Squid Game captivated audiences with its visceral and beyond-the-norm portrayals. Playing the games is what won the award for Squid Game.
