Sammo Hung To Receive Lifetime Achievement Honor At Asian Film Awards

Sammo Hung

Sammo Hung, a martial arts veteran, will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the 2023 Asian Film Awards. After a two-year hiatus, the ceremony will return to Hong Kong as an in-person event, following previous ceremonies in Macau and Busan. Hung is scheduled to accept the medal at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Auditorium in the Hong Kong Palace Museum on March 12, 2023

Hung's career spans 60 years as an actor, action choreographer, director, and producer. As a combat choreographer, he worked with industry heavyweights such as Jackie Chan. Hung was a prominent figure in the 1980s Hong Kong New Wave movement, helping to revolutionize the martial arts genre and launching the vampire-like jiangshi genre. He is generally regarded as helping many of his countrymen get their start in the Hong Kong film business, either by casting them in films he produced or by giving them parts on the production crew. Yes, Madam a.k.a. Police Assassins (1985), which launched actors Michelle Yeoh’s and Cynthia Rothrock’s careers, was produced with his support, revitalizing the subgenre of female-led martial arts films.

His filmography includes the action comedies Dirty Tiger, Crazy Frog and Odd Couple, as well as the paranormal horror comedies Encounters of the Spooky Kind and The Dead and the Deadly, the comedy film series Lucky Stars, and the gangster action flick Shanghai, Shanghai. Hung won best actor at the 2nd Hong Kong Film Awards in 1982 for his directorial effort Carry on Pickpocket. He recently appeared in two Ip Man franchise films and directed a small piece of the anthology film series Septet: The Story of Hong Kong (2021).

The Asian Film Awards Academy presents the Asian Film Awards on an annual basis to honor the excellence of film professionals in the Asian cinema's film industry.
