L.A. Film Critics Association POC Winners
The L.A. Film Critics Association award winners were announced on December 8, 2019. The following people of color and POC-themed projects were some of the winners at the awarded.
Best Picture: Taking home the top prize, Parasite is a film that takes an unpredictable turn as one sees the negative impact class and greed play out between the lower-class Kim and upper-class Park families.
Director: As a director who has already earned his place in Korean cinematic history, Bong Joon Ho has taken America by storm with his ability to produce a riveting drama Parasite off an $11 million budget by interweaving contemporary psychosocial narratives at the intersection of economics and social position in society.
Supporting Actor: Parasite star Song Kang Ho was rewarded for his role as a chauffeur who goes through a series of emotional and psychological changes as the patriarch of the Kim family trying to hold together a ruse while coming to terms with the fact that his employers are not the nice people one may think they are.
Supporting Actress: Triple threat Jennifer Lopez was a winner of the night for her tour de force performance as the stripper turned scheming economic mastermind in Hustlers. The actress once again proved that she has the gravitas to handle a meaty role when given the chance.
Documentary: The documentary American Factory once again shows that the economic relationship between China and the United States is a hot topic that continues to galvanize film critics as told through the lens of a Chinese factory in the midwest and its impact on a working-class community.
Douglas Edwards Independent/Experimental Film: Artist and filmmaker Ja’Tovia Gary was honored for her experimental documentary The Giverny Document which is defined as multi-textured filmatic poetry that explores the safety and bodily autonomy of Black women.
New Generation: Celebrating the next generation in filmmaking director/story creator, Joe Talbot, actor/story creator Jimmie Fails and actor Jonathan Majors were honored for their feature-length project The Last Black Man in San Francisco.
