Hasan Minhaj, Indian American comedian and political commentator, has been chosen to host the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards on March 4, 2023, in Santa Monica. The ceremony, also known as the Indie Awards, was co-hosted by Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman last year, and it was broadcast live on IFC and AMC+.

After performing stand-up comedy and playing supporting roles on television, Minhaj rose to fame for his work as The Daily Show's senior correspondent from 2014 to 2018. Minhaj left The Daily Show in August 2018 to host a weekly comedy show, Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, which debuted on Netflix on October 28, 2018. In April 2019, he won his second Peabody Award and two Webby Awards for Patriot Act. That same year, Minhaj was included on Time's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Minhaj has made a name for himself as a comedian, writer, producer, actor, and television host. He was the featured speaker at the 2017 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Homecoming King, his debut stand-up comedy special, was made available on Netflix on May 23, 2017, and in 2018 it earned him his first Peabody Award. The Morning Show, an Apple TV+ drama series, featured Minhaj in a recurring role throughout season two in 2021.

For 2023, Film Independent made their main acting categories gender-neutral, with 10 nominees in Best Lead Performance and Best Supporting Performance on both the film and TV sides. The group also added a couple of new categories, including Best Breakthrough Performance, which has five nominees.

The 2023 Indie Awards ceremony is set to take place on March 4, 2023, in Santa Monica. The annual indie-focused awards show will stream live on IMDb, Film Independent’s YouTube channel, and other social platforms beginning at 2 p.m. PT.
