Emmy Awards Postponed Amid Actor and Writer Strikes
The 75th Emmy Awards are officially moving off their usual September airdate as actors and writers continue their strikes against media conglomerates.
On September 18, 2023, Fox was to telecast the 2023 edition of the yearly awards. The original date is no longer in consideration, as confirmed by individuals close to the show. Unfortunately, a new date has not yet surfaced. Although the TV Academy and Fox are still negotiating the exact date of the rescheduled event, it is ideal for the presentation to wait until SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) achieve an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
The decision to reschedule was out of practicality since the initial September 18 date runs the risk of playing to a mostly empty room—16 of the 25 awards given during the 2022 Emmy telecast went to actors or writers. SAG-AFTRA’s strike rules call for actors not to do publicity for work made by struck companies, and the ceremony would lack the material writer from WGA pen for the host and presenters (who would almost certainly be SAG-AFTRA members).
The postponement is the first for the Emmy Awards in over two decades. The previous delay was the Television Academy and CBS pushing back the 2001 ceremony in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Phase two voting for the Emmy Awards is still moving forward as originally planned. TV Academy members will vote on the nominees starting August 17. Uncertainty still surrounds whether the 2023 Emmys will occur in 2023.
