Daytime Emmy Awards Expands To Three Nights In 2020

National Academy of TV Arts and Sciences - Emmy Award

In recent years the National Academy of TV Arts and Sciences (NATAS) has been besieged with drama over its nominating and voting process for the Daytime Emmy Awards. It has also continued to suffer a year-to-year battle with trying to find a platform to air the main awards show. With its last broadcast airing on CBS in 2011 and its last cable airing on POP in 2015. Since then, the Daytime Emmy Awards has aired on multiple online platforms (YouTube, Facebook, and Periscope) as well as on the Los Angeles local network KNEKT-TV.

Other issues have included the apparent shift and focal point of the Daytime Emmy Awards away from its once viewership driving daytime drama categories since there are only four remaining daytime dramas (down from 11 that could qualify for the 27th edition the awards ceremony in 2000). Plus, the introduction and later expansion of the Digital Daytime Drama Series categories and the recent decision to combine both the Younger Actor/Actress categories from both the daytime drama and digital daytime drama series into a single category that had many critics of the move crying foul.

Despite the issues that have plagued the awards ceremony, NATAS had made a series of reforms to address critics' concerns about the fairness of the nominating and voting process, as well as the overall production model.

In addition to those reforms, NATAS has just announced that the 47th annual Daytime Emmy Awards will expand from two to three awards ceremonies in 2020 taking on Friday, June 12, 2020, Saturday, June 13th, 2020 and Sunday, June 14th, 2020. This move will allow for an increased amount of deserving industry professionals to have the chance to be honored for their contributions to daytime television.

The move came when Steve Ulrich was appointed to a newly-created role as senior vice president, production and events, in which he is in charge of all aspects of the planning and production of the Daytime, Sports, News & Documentary, and Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards, in addition to other awards ceremonies under NATAS's purview.
