Changes Coming To The Emmy's
The Emmy Awards are going through a realignment. The realignment is by genre and not by daypart. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) and the Television Academy announced that the Game Show categories will no longer be handed out during the Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony which is under NATAS’ jurisdiction and will instead be presented during the primetime ceremony for the Television Academy starting next year.
The following is a list of the four major changes happening to the Game Show categories:
The first change is related to the eligibility period for nominations. With the changes, the eligibility period has been expanded to help with the migration of NATAS to the Television Academy Emmys with an 18-month window, January 1, 2022, through May 31, 2023. In accordance with the new rules, a series with game elements must primarily take place in-studio and involve mental challenges to be eligible for Outstanding Game Show. They must be self-contained or carry-over (winner continues to next episode) and cannot be arced.
The second change is that for the Outstanding Host for a Game Show category, the award will be presented to the “master of ceremony” host(s) for a continuing performance in a Game Show.
The third change is to avoid any confusion between Outstanding Game Show and Outstanding Competition Program (which honors reality & skill-based competitive series), the category for the latter will be revised to Outstanding Reality Competition Program.
The fourth and final change is that game shows and competitive reality series which have children as constants only must submit to be considered in the separately established Children’s & Family Emmy Awards.
