80TH Annual Golden Globe Awards POC Winners

From Left to Right: Eddie Murphy, Angela Bassett, Ke Huy Quan, Quinta Brunson, Rahul Sipligunj, Michelle Yeoh - Gilbert Flores

The 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony which is chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) took place on January 10, 2023, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. The ceremony aired live on NBC and was streamed on Peacock. Everything Everywhere All at Once was the big film winner, taking home two awards. For the television categories, Abbott Elementary took home the most awards with three for the comedy series. Also, Eddie Murphy was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

During his opening monologue for the Globes stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and filmmaker Jerrod Carmichael who hosted the awards ceremony shared his thoughts on the controversy that has surrounded the Globes in recent years.

This show, the Golden Globe Awards, did not air last year. Because the Hollywood Foreign Press Assocation—which I won’t say is a racist organization. But—they didn’t have a single black member until George Floyd died. So, do with that information what you will.

Carmichael went on to explain how he got his hosting gigs.

Steven Hill is a great producer. And he said, “Jerrod—I’m really honored to be making this phone call.” He said, “I’m producing the 80th Golden Globes and it would be an honor if you would agree to join as the host.” I was like woah—you know. Like one minute you are making mint tea at home. Next, you are invited to be the black face of an embattled white organization.
